I agree with what you said... but I think this conversation started on whether congress is "useful" and not whether the legislation passed is "meaningful" (thanks phony... for clouding this issue).
If congress is a tool that is used to pass legislation, then passing a bunch of legislation makes it useful. We have a congress and it was used to pass x pieces of legislation. Now, whether the perception of that legislation is one of "meaningful" or "not meaningful"-- I agree with your point.
But if we are to determine whether the legislation was "useful" then we have to use the same measuring stick as we use when we determine if congress is "useful"- was the legislation "used" ?
Did the businesses utilize the tax cuts? Did individuals use the unemployment benefits? Did homowners weatherize their houses? If the legislation was used, it was useful... whether it's deemed meaningful or not. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Depends on how you define useful; by definition or connotation.
Definition - Describing something which is used
Connotation - Describing something which is used to accomplish good.
Since "good" is also an entirely abstract concept, you reenter the abstraction loop.
If we're talking strictly the definition, then yes, it is a fact that Congress is useful. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

I don't like that connotation... I would replace "good" with "purposefully"... used to accomplish something purposefully. I don't see why it has to be good... an industrial food processor in conjunction with a toilet is useful in disposing of bodies... for example _________________ The end is nigh! Well, it depends on how you define "good." And I'm not gonna, cause this will go on forever. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

He just wants a bill to go through, even if he doesn't have a clue of what it is, or what has to be given away. Take what you want at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue for your vote for Health Care.
There was this patriot who had a country and Obama had a bar and asked the partiot to watch his bar for a while while Obama took the patriots country up to the bed room.
Everyone who came in got drinks on the house. When asked what was he doing, he replied," I am doing to Obama's bar what Obama is upstairs doing to my country. |

You are starting to sound like Bill Clinton. It depends on how you define "is". |

I know what he meant... "good" could just mean "effective"--- not a moral or ethical "good" but "good at" doing something _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

Let me get this straight......we're trying to pass a health care plan written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that hasn't read it but exempts themselves from it, to be signed by a president that also hasn't read it and who smokes, withfunding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke.
What could possibly go wrong???? |
