I don't like anything with "Light" or "Lite" in the title. That's just water with beer flavorings.
Recently, I've been introduced to Belgian beer, which has a tremendous variety and tastes uniformly delicious. It's costly, but due to high alcohol content, it's best to sip and enjoy the beer instead of slugging it down, like a weak American lager. _________________ -- Harry from the paper

Maybe I just haven't been introduced to a good one, but in general even the smell of beer makes me nauseous. I used to carry a half-empty (half-full ?) glass around at parties so no one would try to top it off and I wouldn't have to drink any. _________________ -amom

The kind of beer you drink just walking around at a party is enough to make a lot of people nauseous. A really good beer is like a good wine. You can get a whole range of tastes and flavors. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

It's like a good cigar, in a way. If you light up a White Owl, people are going to get nauseous. If you smoke, say, an Ashton, someone is as likely to say, "Hey, that doesn't smell bad at all!"
If you've been subjected to Coors Light out of a plastic cup, that's a very good reason to walk around all night with a half-full cup so that you really don't have to drink any. _________________ -- Harry from the paper

I'm finding that Ommegang (Cooperstown, NY) is rapidly becoming my favorite domestic brewery. I tried the Abbey Ale yesterday, and it's excellent!
Other brands include Hennepin, a Belgian-style Saisson that is pretty darned close to an actual Belgian, and Funkhouse Ale, which his a distinctively sour flavor. Then there's something called Chocolate Indulgence, which I haven't tried, but I'm sure it will taste good despite the name.
I've been wanting to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame again (after 25 years) and have to make a stop at Ommegang!

Oh, and Ommegang also makes Three Philosophers, as referenced by Abomb, but I haven't tried that yet. _________________ -- Harry from the paper

I tried a few beers from a company called Great Divide the other night. Their attempt at a Belgian style didn't leave a very good aftertaste. But their barleywine-style ale was interesting, with a definitive cocoa flavor in there.
Beware of the barleywines. Strong stuff! _________________ -- Harry from the paper

I've thought about it, and I think I can now chart the growth of a beer aficionado in stages, sort of like an evolution.
Stage 1: Discovery of macro lagers or mainstream independents
Stage 2: First hints of actually liking the taste of beer instead of just drinking it to fit in with your friends
Stage 3: Discovery of micros and ales/imports
Stage 4: Development of appreciation for craft beers, micros, and imports as being superior to American macros
Stage 5: Discovery of rare imports and Belgian style ales and the development of an affinity for beers with higher ABV
Stage 6: Beer snob stage part 1; the understanding and belief that ales are ALWAYS better than lagers
Stage 7: Beer snob stage part 2; a belief that ales that are not Belgian, while still good, are inferior to Belgians; also, a better understanding of the different styles of beers and the development of a tendency towards your particular style when ordering beers
Stage 8: Coming to understand that good beers can come in many styles and that the realization in stage 6 was wrong because there ARE excellent lagers too
Stage 9: A renewed appreciation for micros and a renewed enthusiasm for experiencing beers of all types and origins beyond the Belgian ales
Stage 10: ? I'm still at stage 9 _________________ Sincerely,
OR Guy
