Have some Yuengling in the fridge right now. Good beer at a good price. But according to some folks over on the daily poll this weekend, beer and every other adult beverage are evil, especially if you allow a teenager to take a sip. It's this kind of WCTU thinking that creates an aura of mystery around alcohol that, in turn, makes responsible drinking by young people less likely, not more. _________________

Phony, did your people, from the old country, make their own wine? _________________

Yes, my dad was known for his superb wine. He didn't make any for "sale", just for his own personal use. He also made his own whiskey. (moonshine)
At age 80, he went for his physical, and he seemed concerned about how much he was drinking, so he asked the doctor if he may be an alcoholic.
Dr. wanted to know what he drank, daily, and he answered: "I open my eyes in the morning with a coffee and whiskey, a couple beers at lunch, a glass of wine at supper, and close my eyes with another coffee and whiskey." Dr. asked how long has this drinking been going on, and my dad answered, "All my life"...
Dr. said don't stop now, that's probably what has kept you in such good health.....My dad passed away at 94. _________________ Exposing the secular humanist liberal "progressives". |

That sounds like a life well-lived, Phony. I've been religiously finishing my day with two glasses of red wine at dinner (a little more if I'm cooking). There's just too much evidence of its benefits for me not to do it. Plus, I love wine. So that works out. _________________

Yeungling is a tasty lager. Beats the likes of Bud/Miller/Coors across the board; taste and price. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

What's the going rate for one of those, and where did you get it? _________________

Well, the bottle I had was a 750 ml bottle, one of those that looks like a wine bottle, so keep that in mind when I quote prices. Its a Trappist so its going to be at a premium obviously. I bet Sharp Edge has them although I didn't get it there. If they have them, I'm guessing in the 20-30 dollar range. However, I picked it up on my last trip to DC at the Wegmans in Fairfax for $14. That's also where I got that Ommegang Abbey Ale from a couple posts back for $9, a $20 beer up here. The PA alcohol prices are extortion. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Unfortunately, we have a Soviet system of alcoholic beverage sales in this state, and I don't think I'll live to see that change. You have the conservative lawmakers in the central and northern parts of the state who are against drinking (or any other fun) and would ban it entirely if they thought they could get away with it. Then you have the Democratic lawmakers who want to protect all those union jobs at the state stores. It's a lose-lose situation for us consumers, who are getting #$%^&*. But, making the best of a bad situation, I've found a highly affordable and highly drinkable pinot noir at the state state behind the Washington Mall. As soon as you go through the door, look at the shelf to your left with the French wines. It's on the end closest to the door, down toward the bottom, and is called Pinot Evil. It has the see-no-evil, hear-no-evil and speak-no-evil monkeys on the label. And they're selling it for $7.99 a bottle. Worth every penny. _________________

I love that outlet store... If I get a chance, I will check out that Pinot... I like the Gabbiano Chianti also, and mentioned that wine last year on your blog prior to adopting my "handle"--- I believe the word "Pretentious" was in the title of your blog post _________________ The end is nigh! The Gabbiano is great. Another good one, located directly above the Pinot Evil on the top shelf, is Parallel 45 Cotes du Rhone. Mmmmm. _________________

Does P45 have other wines in it's repetoire? I don't know if I've had the CDR, but I am sure I have had a P45 of some variety...
If you are the kind of oenophile that likes to see (or taste) a wine play off of food... Get a bottle of Napa Ridge Pinot Noir (2004 or 2005)-- it's a cheap, watery Pinot that is quite unimpressive on it's own. Drink a glass of that with no food pairing... be disappointed...
Then, drink a glass of it while eating chicken breast pinwheels... pounded chicken tenders, lined with tomato sauce, basil, garlic and pepper and rolled into delightful packages of red, white, and green awesomeness... (you could probably pair it up with any distinctly italian-red-sauce based meal)...
And Ta-dah! The wine... it comes ALIVE! _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

Maybe I'll give that a try over the weekend. I'm thinking of making chicken parm. _________________

After reading all your suggestions on beer and/or wines, I thought I'd throw in my two cents worth: Best beer hands down is A&W Root Beer in the glass bottles! (or out of the tap at the restaurant into an icy mug) _________________ -amom
