Might I suggest Frostie root beer. It's been around since I was a kid. It went missing for many years, but someone apparently revived the brand, and Giant Eagle is carrying it. Hires used to make a great root beer, too. Don't know if they're still in the business.

Apparently, making your own root beer isn't too difficult. Maybe I'll dig up a recipe for you guys.

This is akin to eating mayonnaise sandwiches and tongue-kissing your sister... but breyers has Rootbeer Float Ice Cream... it's awesome!

I'm not a bit root beer person, except if it is in float form... so to get the flavor sensation (albeit without the mouth feel) without having to buy 6 times as much root beer as is necessary... Priceless!

Had a belgian style trippel from a Maine brewery called Allagash the other day. Definitely worth a look if you can find it.

Well, I've had the chance to try a number of good beers during the couple months I was away, so I'll list the tops ones to try here:

Horn Dog Barley Wine from Flying Dog Brewery, a sweet and strong darker ale at 10% abv

Abita's Turbodog English style ale, great smokey ale

Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout

Bad Penny from Big Boss Brewery out of Raleigh NC, probably my favorite Brown Ale

Mothership Wit from New Belgium Brewing out of Colorado, my new favorite witbier.

And I had a chance to try Sapporo Reserve which is my new favorite Japanese beer and the only one I've had that's NOT brewed with rice if that catches your attention. Its done in the style of a Euro pale lager and compliments Japanese food well. For anyone that has had a Sapporo in a big silver can before, this one looks the same but comes in a big gold can.

And on the other hand, least favorite beer that I've tried is the Leikenkugel's Summer Shandy, which is beer mixed with lemonade. I'm not even lying. Its actually not that bad, but I would never choose to drink it again.

I may have had that oatmeal stout... does it have a foil cell over the top?

I have a Sapporo can somewhere... I'm gonna have to dig that up... it's an old one... I think it's in my grandma's barn Smile

Yeah, I think all the Samuel Smiths beers have the foil top.

There is still a Frosty Rootbeer stand with the big frosty mug outside turning all the time with curb service in Huntington WV. Just down the street from Marshall University. My son went there and still lives about 15 miles away. I go down just about everytime we visit him..

I think I just found my favorite thread. Call me a hop-head, a beer snob, a home brewer, and drunk *ss! I just wish I could have been on here back in October when the discussion started.

I drank five Summer Solstices during last nights Pens game. Its one of the few Summer seasonal brews that is not a wheat beer. Brewed by Anderson Valley's solar powered brewery in Mendocino, Cali. I highly recommend anything they brew. The Summer Solstice, however, is second to its conterpart, Winter Solstice... which is my xmas present to myself every year.

Anyway, I haven't done a home brew in probably a year now. I need to get some new (clean) equipment. But I love to talk beer, brewing, and even business. So I'll be frequenting this thread.

Nice, I'll have to check that brewery out. My xmas present to myself last year was a Samiclaus from Eggenberg brewery in Austria. Sharp Edge had a few.

As for home brewing, did my first one back in March. It was a simple witbier but I overcarbonated it and it was a little too fizzy. Gonna try to do an IPA at some point this summer.

Abomb... I ate at a sharp edge something or other in Crafton 2 weeks ago...

I know the bra is on 19 in mcmurray, right? Do they have a bunch of different restaurants? This one wasn't a sharp edged bra... it was like sharp edge boat house or something like that...

Anyway, didn't have any beer because it was a business lunch... and that whole "Sam Adams" thing doesn't fly in real life Smile

And for the record... I am no beer snob... give me a sam adams boston lager or summer ale and I am okel dokel...

Now wines <15 dollars... that's a different story Smile

I polished off a bottle of Trinchero Merlot last week that I could write a book about... I don't know if it REALLY got that much better as the bottle got lighter, or if I just got shitfaced and didn't realize it Smile

Yeah, the Sharp Edge Brasserie is in McMurray off 19 where the Raddiccios or whatever its called is. That fancy shmancy grocery store.

Sharp Edge Creekhouse is the one in Crafton.

The Sharp Edge Bistro is in Sewickley.

The Sharp Edge Beer Emporium is in the Friendship neighborhood of Pittsburgh and that's the only other one I've ever been to. Its cramped and has sort of a dive atmosphere.

The Brasserie is nicer and has the largest selection of taps of the 4 by far. Plus Harry goes there lots so you might run into him. He's kind of a celebrity there now. When I go, I can name drop him to any of the tenders, waitresses or patrons, and I have yet to get a single one who wasn't like, "Yeah, I know Harry!"

Creekhouse! That's it!

I had a Mediterranean veggie panini... we sat on the deck...

I mentioned that a "Friend" of mine was fond of the sharp edged Brasserie and wondered if the creekhouse was in the same family of restaurants... our client had no idea... and his perspective on the beer selection inside was "they have some weird beers that are really expensive"

Smile

Had a beer called Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout yesterday. Its in the style of a Russian Imperial Stout, as those of you who can read might have guessed, but its out of a brewery in California. Its the darkest beer I've ever seen! When held up to the light, its still pitch black with no transparency. The flavors and smells range from smokey malts, coffee, caramel and even a hint of fig like fruitiness. It also packs a wallop at 9% abv. If I had to post a list of 10 beers that I think everyone should try, this would be one of them.
