Christmas Eve started off with a couple Smithwicks at the inlaws, then a couple Rogue Yellow Snow? or something like that. It was an IPA with like 30 different hops listed on the bottle. I was pretty "merry", but I remember it being very good. It was the only new brew that I tried.

Ok, Rogue Yellow Snow definitely needs revisited. I drank my buddy's last one with a clean pallet last night, and it was the bomb-diggity! If you're a hophead, this beer is a must try. Obviously, its a seasonal. Poured it nice and gentle down the side of the glass... and it still foamed up to the top. The taste is nice and bitter. Once you've swallowed the beer, there is an extreme earthy taste... almost piney. I enjoyed the fact that you can taste the different hops used. I love you Rogue.

Then my buddy's brother showed up with his Grandpa's Christmas present: a 12-pack of Fat Tire. If you don't know about Fat Tire, it's rather legendary. Only available in a few states, it has sort of a mystique because its hard to get. I've never tried it before. Gotta admittt, it was a huge let down. It followed a heavily hopped seasonal, but I still expected more. It was dry, bland, slightly sweet... nothing to travel to Colorado for (as stories go). As the writing on the bottle said "Fat Tire is still brewed as Jeff first brewed it as a home brew". And it definitely has a home brew taste.

Lol...maybe you got a bum bottle. I thought Fat Tire was good...nothing to write home about but worth trying. Of course, I'm down in Raleigh, North Carolina a lot where you can pick it up at every grocery store and restaurant in town.

There's a much better beer from that brewery called Mothership Wit. Its a Witbier like Wittekirke or the inferior Blue Moon, but unlike the latter its done right. If you like that style, its probably the best I've ever had in it...unibrou's Chambly is close. I know you like Hoegaarden dick, and I think it blows that out of the water.

Mmmmm, Hoegaarden. I want to drive to the South Side right now and have a couple of Hoegaardens with a headwich at Fatheads.

First off, the word "inferior" should always precede Blue Moon. It really should be mandated by the FDA that it prints that on its label.

I'm actually not a wheat beer fan at all. I avoid them at all costs unless its one I've never tried before or lack of other options. I used to sell Hoe, so there is some loyalty there. I still push it to the masses over Blue Moon. Never ordered a Blue Moon, never will.

I could kill an Artery Clogger right now. Those greasy chips would melt in my stomach.

That'd be nice. We'll have to do that someday.

So I cracked the Hibernation Ale!

Looks great, reddish brown color with minimal head.

Smells rich and creamy with a bit of spice and a hint of hops.

Tastes....ah jeez, just okay I guess.

Feels moderate thick, but could do with a little more carbonation.

I feel...I don't know. For some reason I built this one up in my head and it started off so good. It is good, definitely better than average, but its not the home run I was thinking it would be.

I guess it depends on how much and what kind of sugar they are using to generate the alcohol.

Had a Sri Lankan beer with my Thai food last night called Lion Stout. It was in the style of something called an "Export Stout" but it was basically a slightly lower abv version of an Imperial Stout; still came in at 8% abv.

Very tasty and delicious, like RIS. Possibly even darker. Some good spiced notes too. Went with my pad thai really well. I might start looking for this beer to drink regularly.

I'm surprised pad thai works well with a stout... With asian food in general, I like something bright and crisp...

Even in selecting wines... regardless of what the dish is, I like to cut those layered spices with a high pitched white wine like a chardonnay or a riesling

Yeah, it seems counter-intuitive...I normally like a euro lager with spicy or asian food. But this just worked. Maybe because the pad thai at this particular restaurant mixed in shrimp and had a lemon flavor to it. If you think of the meal as a song, normally the spicy asian food is the bass. Its deep, hits your palette slow and hard. The lager balances that like a treble, being on the tip of your tongue and tasting sweet. But this pad thai was light and flavorful and not very spicy, so it was kind of like the treble. The stout, being heavy, less carbonated, and savory, gave it a foundation. I don't think it would work with pad thai other than from this particular restaurant.
