If all that happens to me is a leak in the downstairs bathroom, I'll be grateful. Haven't lost power yet, no actual roof collapses...I really can't complain. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

Now I've something new to be nervous about. I guess I'll be climbing into the attic in the morning with a flashlight to check out all the nooks and crannies before it gets to the indoor creek stage. |

Cy, it's extremely rare for a house roof to collapse under the weight of snow.
I have room to talk, 'cause I just spent an hour helping a neighbor shovel snow off his roof. The only reason I did it..? 'Cause he's 71, unsteady on his feet, and just had by-pass surgery. And a touch of cabin fever..(for both of us)
In these conditions, odds are that a bathroom leak is coming from condensation caused by an exhaust vent clogged by snow accumulation.
Treat it like a cliff edwards virus -- just ignore it, it'll go away _________________ where-ever you get it - there you have it. - Anon. |

Now there's a thought on why my laundry room is full of water...I couldn't find the source of that one. But the bathroom is leaking along the top of the window sill. I can see the water seeping in through the wood. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

That means there is melting snow traveling down the trusses and into the wall and past the window header. It's nothing to be alarmed of, unless you own the building _________________ where-ever you get it - there you have it. - Anon. |

On my first read-through of this, I thought it said "nothing to be ashamed of"--- well, duh! It's not like mouth-herpes! Then I was like... oh, wait, nevermind _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

If it's an older place, most likely it's coming in around the chimney or the valley flashing (that's where two angles of the roof meet)..Advise landlord that a repair job is pretty close in price to a new roof. I recommend Nicolella, they are the best. (and I DO roofing, but they're better than me) _________________ where-ever you get it - there you have it. - Anon. |

Cy, Sounds like the Gutters are iced over and have formed a dam, melting roof snow is backing up on the roof and seeping in under the shingles and down the inside walls is most probable cause. It happened to me just once and the basement got pretty wet, but not flooded.
People should never mess with trying to remove snow/ice from gutters, because a "mess" is what you will have. Mother Nature handles it in her own time. |

What about icicles? I see huge ones that would kill someone if they were underneath when they fall. Shouldn't they be knocked off to reduce the weight on the gutter and prevent death? _________________ -amom

If not to prevent death, at least for the FUN of it! I checked the attic last night... no water, yet... scary amount of ice on the gutters, though... seriously, millions of trillions of pounds... or thousands _________________ The end is nigh! No. Do not get on a ladder to bust off icicles. If you can reach them with a broom or shovel, fine. 20 years experience on ladders and roofs --listen.
I've fallen off both...and it doesn't happen slowly, like in the movies, and it ain't funny, like family home videos...
Just wait it out.....This too, shall pass _________________ where-ever you get it - there you have it. - Anon. |

of course, icicles are good, means the water is going over the gutter and not backing up under the shingles. |

I have eight buckets stationed through out the store. A few of them need changed daily. At home, the kitchen window is letting water in somehow. We have a few shot glasses stationed on top of a towel. _________________

We have wooden floors in the oldest section of the house, so the underside of the upstairs floor is the ceiling of the downstairs room. The other day we thought we had a leak from the roof since all of a sudden some clear liquid was dripping onto my couch through the cracks of the floor/ceiling. When I ran upstairs to that room, which we are using as storage, I found liquid all over the floor too! Until I put my finger into it and smelled it...hmm, Sprite? Yup, somehow when we were leaning out the window to knock down icicles, we had punctured a can of pop, that was now running everywhere. Minor problem easily resolved. _________________ -amom
