I'll clarify. A white person referring to any minority with an ethnic slur is racist because our society has been dominated throughout history by white male influence and as such, the use of slurs by white males against minorities is a representation of their unfair expression of power. A minority referring to itself by the same slur is really unrelated to that debate. It has nothing to do with how right or wrong it is for a white person to use that slur at all. Bringing it up as you did seemed like nothing more than an attempt to redirect the discussion away from the original direction it was going. I can infer one motivating factor for this; you disagreed with my premise that white people in Western PA are generally more racist than in other places because they still use racial slurs that you do not hear from white people in other areas, but you were unable or unwilling to construct a logical counterargument and instead reacted by attempting to switch to a different argument that you felt you could win if you could get me to participate in it. You did so by attempting to switch the focus of the original argument from racist white people to the inappropriateness of the n-word. However, I was not finished arguing the original subject, racist white people. This is why I asked, "what does that have to do with anything?"

Wow-you read an awful lot of bullchyt from one short post!

I agree that any racial slur is wrong. But I do not know where all you have been in this country. I have traveled extensively professionally and recreationally and I have heard it every where I went. There is no denying that western PA is racist but more so than other parts of the country? No way. Spend some time in Alabama or Georgia then see if you still feel that way. The KKK is at least somewhat discrete in this area-they are out in the wide open there.

I lived in Alabama for three years and spent considerable amounts of time in Georgie and Mississippi too. While it was definitely bad down there, I would say it was on par with here, except that they tempered their language more. Its also gotten somewhat better down there in the twelve or so years since I lived there; I've gone back a few times. There's a large black population in the southern states now so that probably has something to do with it. Haven't run into the KKK in any place yet which I'm glad is the case, but I do hear stories about them meeting around these parts. Stories are just stories though. I'm not saying Western PA is the most racist place on earth or even in the US, just the most racist I have lived in in terms of them being out in the open with it.
