Me also. Learned my lesson after Hurricane Ivan in '04. When we were looking to buy a house, if there was a creek anywhere near the place, we crossed it off the list. Until you've been flooded, you can't imagine the mess. _________________

I've never been flooded but I know some who have and when I moved here, I was well aware of the propensity of flooding (compared to some other places). My current home being on a hill was not the deciding factor for us choosing it, but it was an attribute we were conscious of. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. We used to live near the river and were flooded rather significantly in the November 1985 flood. Funny I was just thinking about that flood on Friday night, since the same eerie silence pervaded my memory of the errie silence of that flood. We lived on the third floor and remained overnight when all my neighbors had left for higher ground. The only sounds were things falling over in the basement now and then...the same as the occasional branch cracking off and fallling Friday night. Weird. _________________ -amom

I'm sure your memories are much like mine, SSSS. That was a long couple of days. _________________

was that when someone (Corp of Engineers)opened the dam at Cheat Lake ? Fredericktown main street was under 10 feet or more of water.
and shortly there after, a barge got stuck in the locks and they had to drain the Mon to free it? The Mon was 3 feet wide at Fredericktown. |

That was the flood. "Human Error," but denied completely by those causing all that damage. Although I don't remember the Mon being drained. _________________ -amom

Can't remember the exact date, but I am sure it was the Maxwell Locks where a coal barge jammed the gates and finally they drained the Mon and had to cut the barge to get it out.
The barge was jammed in the front gates so no barges could either come up the Mon or go down the Mon. I often wonder what all was found in the muck from over the years. |
