So... Brad Hundt's facebook page last week inspired me to actually sit down this past weekend and watch Aguirre: The Wrath of God... which is in every top 10 movies of all time list ever...

I don't get it... It was entertaining and all that... but really? One of the best films EVER MADE ever on earth?

I'm not speaking of Brad, but I think there are some people who say they like a film just because they are "supposed" to think it's great. I frequently run into movies that are supposed to be important films or cinematic works of art, and I wonder who in the hell could possibly sit through them. To each their own.

I understand that... but it is so consistently highly ranked that there has to be something to it... The story was good, don't get me wrong... and it didn't have some feel-good, cheesy, unrealistic twist to it-- which was kind of unexpected... it followed a pretty linear plot line, which is certainly a departure from what we've come to expect of movies...

I don't know, I just didn't "get" the greatness...

The traffic cone colored blood didn't help either Smile

Really? I've never even heard of it. I was literally seconds away from starting my own thread on this kind of topic, but since you beat me I'll just start it here.

My personal top 10 most OVERRATED films of all time:

The Thin Red Line - Incredibly long and boring

Titanic - Melodramatic to the extreme

Gone with the Wind - I absolutely hate the lead characters

The Sixth Sense - It was good one time and that's all

The English Patient - Not my genre, but honestly the book was good; the movie blows

Blood Simple - I know there are Coen aficionados who will hate me, but this just doesn't stand up to their later standards; I guess what I mean is it has aged very poorly

Scarface - I actually like this movie, but it didn't live up to the hype. Its kind of a mess.

Independence Day - This movie was all the rage when it came out, but try watching it now

The Exorcist - Sure its creepy, but there are about a hundred movies I find scarier than this one

Dirty Dancing - No offense to Swayze, RIP, but why is this movie not considered trash?

Wow... including independence day in there was random squared Smile Smile

I don't understand why waterworld is so universally panned... I thought it was good... I mean, I'd watch it again...

I don't like any movie that really relies heavily on a technological element... eventually, the computers in Minority Report are going to look like the computers in... I dunno... any futuristic movie ever made before 1999

Every movie ever made is rarely worth the time to watch again.certainly none of the above.

The only one I ever bought was "Legends of the Fall".

My top 10 most underrated movies ever would be (in no particular order):

Dark City - Did what the Matrix did first

Donnie Darko - Hard to explain, you just have to "get" it

Double Indemnity - IMO the best film noir

Miller's Crossing - The best Coen movie but gets little recognition

Brazil - What a movie version of 1984 should have been

Ghost in the Shell - Because Anime in general is often overlooked in the west and this is the best there is

Tetsuo: The Iron Man - Totally bizarre and beyond explanation, but somehow entrancing

The Fountain - Totally misunderstood when released; the meaning was apparently too deep for most

Evil Dead 2 - Everyone either loves ED 1 or Army of Darkness, but ED 2 was a perfect balance between the extremes the first and third movie of the trilogy represented.

Jackie Brown - Tarantino's best effort to date, IMO

Cy, I agree with most of what you have to say. I would disagree about "The Sixth Sense." Like any movie that relies on a twist, it's only good once, but I thought it was very spooky. Same with "The Exorcist." And while "The Thin Red Line" may be rotten, "The Thin Blue Line" is in my Top 10.

I thought the fountain sucked hardcore... but then again, I was expecting a 16th century period piece... a sword and sandal flick, which I'm a sucker for Smile

Scarface was the leading movie for the number of times the f-word was spoken

Yeah, and I can totally see that. It would have helped if they told everyone ahead of time that 1) it was a sci-fi pic and 2) it was based on a graphic novel. The only part of the film that was real was the present day; the 18th century part was the wife's book which symbolized her battle with cancer from her point of view and how the search for the cure was consuming her husband, and the future part was the husbands subconscious representation of his lonely journey to save his wife. It was 66% metaphorical. I think that went over most peoples' heads.

I LOVE THIS THREAD!

I haven't seen Aguirre: The Wrath of God. I'll ck it out!

About the overrated movies...

The Thin Red Line & Blood Simple - I've never seen them.

Titanic - Definitely overrated...I like it, but I think it has to do with personal memories, not the movie itself...

Gone with the Wind - Growing up in GA I was forced to watch it in history class. I liked it better when I watched as an adult, but it's definitely way too long. It drags! Some of the characters are pretty annoying too...

The Sixth Sense - I disagree about this one...I've seen it many times and I still like it bc I notice more details...

The English Patient - I couldn't watch it...It was sooooo boring!

Scarface - I liked it better when it was re-released for the 20th anniversary and I saw it at the theater in NYC...I think the crowd made it fun bc they were sooo into it!

Independence Day - I agree...This movie didn't age well...

The Exorcist - It's still creeps me out...I don't know if it's the scariest movie I've seen though...

Dirty Dancing - Cute, feel good movie...Not a great film!

About the underrated list...

Dark City, Donnie Darko, Miller's Crossing, The Fountain - I totally agree! Great movies!

Double Indemnity, Brazil, Ghost in the Shell, Tetsuo: The Iron Man--Never seen them...maybe I should!!

Evil Dead 2 - My husband loves these movies...I think they're ok!

Jackie Brown - Not one of my fave Tarantino movies...

I remember the previews for The Thin Red Line. It was supposed to be a star studded war movie.... my expectations were so high. We got baked and I took all of my friends to go see it. At least two of them fell asleep around the 2 hour mark. Needless to say, it took five years to regain my movie credibliliy.

Donnie Darko is a great movie.

My wife says that I'm the only person in the world who has never seen Titanic.

Seriously, get Scarface off the over rated list immeadiately. Tony Montana shouldn't be on bright red, oversized, rhinestone t-shirts worn by 14 year old white boys, but that doesn't mean Pacino's character doesn't make that movie totally worth watching. I never heard of this movie when I saw it. So, no expectations on my first watch whatsoever.

I'm a casual Tarantino fan. I really enjoy Jackie Brown, but that chick who plays Jackie Brown gets on my nerves as the movie goes on. I just don't believe her.

Underrated, in my opinion:

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
The Patriot
Braveheart
Gladiator
A Knight's Tale
Jurassic Park
Face Off
Silence of the Lambs
Hannibal
Willow

I say underrated because every one of them is massively entertaining... I can't see them losing their appeal over time... granted, in Jurassic Park, that young chick is really digging the "interactive CD-ROM"... but those dinosaurs looked mad real, yo!
