|
|
In my experience anyway. These are the big culprits:
pique or piqued. I see peeked and peaked a lot. Picked probably happens too for people who pronounce it that way.
clique. People spell it click.
prima donna. I've recently seen pre madonna and preema donna. At least they both got the two words part right.
judgment. Not judgement.
license. I used to do this one all the time: its not liscense.
prerogative. People rarely pronounce the first r leading to perogative.
lien. When someone puts a lean on your house, they're really putting a lien on it.
What about everyone else? Don't count things that are obvious typos. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

What was the one that JDangles always messed up... it was a phrase... and he'd use the wrong words or something. I don't remember.
Darnit, I can't think of any right now... _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

Oh, and I disagree with Cy on "judgement." I worked for a legal team and that's how I learned to spell it. Most dictionaries permit either spelling. _________________ -amom

Judgement with an E is the accepted British spelling. Without is the accepted American spelling. You can only get away with spelling Judgement with an E if you're also spelling colour with the U, etc. In the legal system, archaic spellings are common. _________________ The end is nigh! But I do spell "colour" that way. And it's always "grey" not "gray." While we are at it, "its" is a pronoun and "it's" is a contraction, another huge common error.
I may not know politics, and its right vs left, but I know spelling! _________________ -amom

I see a lot of suprise, when it should be surprise.
More than mispelling, what REALLY bothers me is improper usage of there/their/they're |

I still screw gray and grey up. For its, I always think of this trick:
You don't use apostrophes for his or hers, so you don't with its. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

When I saw that judgment was correct... all I felt was because I put an e in there all the time. |

The yours and the twos and the there's get messed up a lot...
Also, while I almost kinda purposefully avoid adhering ABSOLUTELY to comma rules when writing on here (in favor of bringing across a particular tone or meter, rather than being punctuationally correct), I do notice comma errors online a lot.
There are at least two in that last sentence.
Oh! I just remembered Dangles' thing...
The phrase is "for all intents and purposes" and he would say "for all-intensive purposes" _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

Yeah, that's a common one. There are a lot of phrases like that that get messed up too. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

I definitely say "for all intensive purposes".
I'm slightly embarrassed, but I just learned something. |
