Yeah, that's why I started this thread. Figured we could all chip in and teach other stuff. For example, I didn't realize that they use judgement with the e in legal documentation, although I should have since I took a legal writing course as part of my Masters. I'm still going to spell it without the e though. Wink Also, didn't know that gray was never right.

Some of the things that I've "learned" recently are so dumb that I can't even remember what I used to think they are... I'll have to ask my wife about them, she always makes fun of me.

One that annoys me is when someone says "I could care less about that"...

I think of it this way:

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being "don't care at all" and 10 being "Care so much I want to adopt it and take it into the woods to live happily ever after" how much do you care about X.

If you don't care AT ALL, then you are a 1 and you could NOT possibly care any less. You don't care.

However, if you cared a little bit (>/= 2) then you COULD care less, which means you care somewhat.

The phrase is "for all intents and purposes" and he would say "for all-intensive purposes"

I was one-week into a job and taking shorthand (yeah, I'm that old) when my new boss used that phrase. Having never heard it before, I typed "all intensive" since it made sense. Embarassed He got a laugh out of it anyway.

The proper phrase is, "I couldn't care less." "I could care less" is incorrect.

BTW, a google search reveals that gray is acceptable in American spelling when referring to the adjective, as in "a gray area." It is also an SI unit of measurement of energy absorbed from ionizing radiation.

But I do spell "colour" that way. Wink And it's always "grey" not "gray." While we are at it, "its" is a pronoun and "it's" is a contraction, another huge common error.

I may not know politics, and its right vs left, but I know spelling!

I'm not great with the "ible" vs "able" suffixes. Usually, I can figure it out by looking at it, but I'll have to go to one of the many word processors availible Wink on the net.

Thank you! I'll just use rule #3 and type -able since I have an 80% chance of being right.

No, seriously, good rule. I was hoping somebody would let me know.

Here's one, If he thinks I am a fool, he's got another thing coming. THINK!! The kids at school always use this and it drives me nuts, He cutted me! He cut in front of me. Usually said with as much righteous indignation a 7 year old can muster. Another, he can't pass mustard.

I have a visually photographic memory. Things I read or see stick with me for years. Things I hear...not so much.

I should have mentioned that that is my rule...not necessarily a real rule. Cool
