Interesting post, E. Of course, you're going to cause Jane to have a stroke. _________________

I think she might have given up on us because we bullied her too hard or something. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

She's an AM/PM poster... I don't think she "internets" while minding the store...
That's not a dig at her... I'm just stating an observation...
I read into her post this morning that she wasn't heading off into the hinterlands... _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

Looks like the Great Flood is on its way now!
Why would I buy any of those books, when I have a hard enough time keeping up with you guys? I'll be converted in no time! |

You could go to the library
Or am I the only nerd left that still goes to the library?
True story... I wouldn't use W&J's library until I was a senior... It was WAYYYY too intimidating... I was certain I would never be able to find anything of any use in there... so I used citizens library for the first three years...
Citizens is great for recreational reading... but it sure does suck for academic research...
Not that anyone cares... that story wasn't really all that interesting afterall _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

This is where my atheism falters... my answer: maybe... Aristotle's logical deduction is a strong case for a prime mover... but the first action is the ONLY thing in the history of ALL THAT IS that "requires" God. For everything that comes after, God is not necessary. |
Okay, so I’m not answering questions in this thread in order. I’m afraid my brain is just not that ordered!
One of the really frustrating things i encounter in discussions of religion is that two people rarely have the same definitions of abstract concepts like “God”. Language is so inadequate – I suspect math or music are far better media for expressing what is beyond words.
How do you define “God”? If by God you mean some white bearded sky king a lá Terry Gilliam, I’d have to say that I can’t believe that God exists. It’s so human to project our fears and expectations outwardly. Ditto with our tendency to anthropomorphize.
Here’s how I basically think of God. You know how physicists have been chasing a unified theory for so long? Well, I envision God as the mother of all unified theories. God is the reality that underlies and connects everything that is, was, and ever will be, even all the things that are unknowable due to the limitations of our perceptive capacities.
Is there a God? I don’t know. Like multitudes of humans back into prehistory, I believe so. 50 million Frenchmen (to the nth power) can’t be wrong and all that. For me belief in God’s existence is a matter of faith rather than reason. I choose to believe that there’s more to reality than what we can see with our limited senses. I call the totality of that underlying, immanent, transcendent, unifying reality, God. _________________ "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." ~Martin Luther King Jr.

And I can basically get on board with you about that... but that leads directly into the whole question of whether or not THAT particular understanding of "god" would give two chits about any earthly issues... or whether it would be capable of doing so...
I would liken this particular concept of God as being less of the "head of state" and more of the "system of governance."
It (god) would not be a "being" per se... so much as the unification of reality. In that case, it is a "power" in as much as you can't really do things any other way (than God's way)... but it's not like "he" is watching you... or is dependent on your love, or you on his... All you can really do, in this situation, is be. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |
