With recent legal troubles and his contract ending at the end of the season, should the Pittsburgh Steelers resign Jeff Reed?

I could care less about his alcohol problems. This is strictly a football decision for me.
Reed is a very accurate kicker, but does not have the distance that most NFL kickers possess. We often hear about the Hienz Field mystique and how tough it is to kick FGs. But Reed isn't given oppotunities from 50 yds in a dome on the road. So its not JUST about Hienz Field's swirling winds. His lack of power is also eminent on kick offs. If you watch NFL games, most kickoffs are near or into the endzone. Reed is lucky to get it to the 10 yd line.
Reed has a lot of leg left. But I think the Steelers will be ready to move on next year. _________________

I agree with Dick. Let's look around. _________________ -amom

He is, or should be, an embarrassment to the team. When you start fighting with police, it's time to go. _________________

To an extent, I enjoy the showmanship... but you can be a jersey boy and dye your hair and beat up paper towel dispensers for only so long before you cross the line (fighting with cops) and people say... "wait a sec... you are the KICKER... your helmet doesn't even have a "real" face mask... you play the position that soccer players take when they can't cut it playing soccer... stop it."
Oh... Jersey Boys:

I have really mixed feeling here. Yes he shows very poor judgement off the field and should be prosecuted for it.. But being an azzhat in a bar does not rise to the level of a Plaxico or a Mike Vick. I think the STeelers need to put some sanctions on him but I do not think sending him packing is the answer. Too many Steeler games come down to three points or less to get rid of a solid kicker without a lot of thought. _________________

Yeah, but he's already lost on of those games this season. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

And let's remember it's a FREAKIN' FOOTBALL GAME. There are much more important things in life, and this is a microcosm of what's wrong with our society. There is no personal responsibility because we have become so forgiving of behavior that once would NOT have been tolerated. _________________

From a strictly business perspective, I think the Steelers can get more bang for their buck at that position. The antics are just icing on the cake. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

You're being a little harsh there Brant. He got plastered and got slammed down by a couple of police officers. I don't know... Pittsburgh police can handle a drunk just fine. He acted like an azz and now he'll pay for it.
Like I said, his numerous offenses of douchebaggary doesn't weight into my thinking whatsoever. He has an ego. He has some alcohol problems, but he's a human being. _________________

But is he a good kicker? Let's drop the whole shenanigans part of it for a minute. Strictly talking field performance. He blew two key kicks just a few weeks ago. Since then he's been adequate. But as already pointed out, he's not the best when it comes to distance. How much is too much to keep him? Or, how much are they willing to spend to get someone better if he becomes available? What if Vinatieri or Gostowski becomes available at the end of the season. Just speaking hypothetically because I haven't even begun to look at their contracts and I would also assume they would be snapped back up anyway. But theoretically, should Pittsburgh be in the market for a kicker based on nothing else than Reed's performance? I think there's room for improvement personally. _________________ The end is nigh! as usual some of you have found him guilty. without even a trail,he has won more games than he has lost.everyone knows that the pittsburgh police dept goes overboard, this being said he has a lot to learn i think he needs to stop acting like one of the brothers, and like all professional ballplayers he will get away with it if he did do what some of you have him guilty of.BB |
