Then why isn't he on it? Jon Kyl should prove to us that its so great by giving up his job to someone who prefers it over unemployment while he lives off of unemployment like a king. _________________ The end is nigh! I don't agree with Kyl but I have know many workers over the years who looked at unemployment as a sort of paid vacation. They would not look for a job (when they were available) until the unemployment was about to run out. I never understood that thinking. When our plant was shutting down in the mid eighties I knew men who didn't bother to show up for the last day or two ( no work no pay). I wondered why they threw away two days pay when unemployment was at hand. They didn't seem to think about their families. |

Perhaps that's not a problem with unemployment benefits being too good but with the employment standards in their job fields being too bad. If you cut corners to run your workers through the wringer and pay them as little as possible to do it, it wouldn't be a surprise that they don't want to go back to work. But with no education opportunities, they don't have much other choice. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

Ours was a union shop so wages were not bad. When I started with a degree, I made less that some operators so I know they wern't paid badly. |

It works the other way, too... if you are making good money and your job is ending on Wednesday, why not skip out on those last two days? It comes down an issue of how much is a day off worth to you? It varies from person to person... I don't mind going to work... I rather enjoy it. Other people, though... if given the opportunity (even at a cost) to take an extra day or two off, wouldn't think twice about taking the days off.
To each their own, I guess _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

My last few days at the old job were literally spent cleaning out the supply cabinet and wiping down desks...not my normal by any means. I did it to prove a point, but I can see where others would say not a chance and duck out a few days early. _________________ -amom

What the diff of a few days...?
My biggest gripe with this other insurance, is that the bulk of money paid into unemployment, comes from the guy who is creating employment in the first place. I defy anyone to explain how that is fair....The employer is being taxed for creating jobs, and the money goes to people who are not working.
My rates went up recently because a nice young girl quit about a year ago, went to a better job, then quit that one to do some volunteer work, and is now unemployed. The PAUC goes back several years to collect compensation.
It's like arguing Alice to the Red Queen. The amount is tiny, so it's not worth fighting...But the logic behind the law is counter-productive _________________ where-ever you get it - there you have it. - Anon. |

I agree, Free! We had a part-time, summer worker one year. When he was hired, he knew it was a temporary position. When he left, he got another part-time position and when he left that one (his choice), he filed for unemployment compensation and we had to contribute also. Made no sense to me. _________________ -amom

With you, amom...And on top of Pennsylvania Unemployment Tax, I have Federal Unemployment tax..(FUTA)....Two government agencies taxing me for unemployment -- because i created employment. Where's my motivation ..?
I won't even bore you with the Local Services Tax from my township, who want a dollar for every week my worker worked... _________________ where-ever you get it - there you have it. - Anon. |

I was unaware that one could collect unemployment if one quit. I thought you had to be let go by the business becasuse of lack of work to collect. |

Technically, that is correct, Pap... but once a former employee files, it's really on the business to prove that they either had cause or that the employee quit.
If an employee can make the case that they "thought" they were fired and that's why they stopped coming to work, and you, as the business owner, can't "prove" that was not the case... there's a good chance that employee will get their unemployment benefits. _________________ The end is nigh! As I stated, it was a tiny increase in the taxes I was already paying, nothing worth fighting over. And just to add a little reality humor to the situation, that "nice girl" ....
Is my mother.
She now owns a condo by the beach, and makes ten times what I do.
