|

I'm getting a lot of mixed results on the internet. Since I trust the knowledge of most of yinz, does anyone know if its safe to use a propane range indoors? I suppose theres a danger of carbon monoxide. So I should have a CO detector, a fire extinguisher handy, and the window open.
Or is this a really bad idea? _________________

Propane is heavier than air. Thus you run the risk of it collecting along the floor of your home if there is a leak. Then, the refrigerator's motor clicks on, and its like Fight Club but real life.
And of course, the fumes. I think it sounds risky to me. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

I would advise against it... not only is there the risk of carbon monoxide accumulating, but also depletion of oxygen due to a rather forceful open flame...
Are you talking about a range like a "stove" or a range like a "Grill" ??
Because a grill is a bad idea... but they make propane ranges that are meant to be installed in kitchens. A grill and a stove are designed to deliver heat in different ways, so they aren't equal in terms of safety for use indoors... if it is something that looks like a gas stove that runs on propane, it's probably fine... if you are bringing the grill in off the porch, that's not a good idea. _________________ The end is nigh! I've been working two weeks on this room in my basement to convert into a small, very small brewing operation. In order to brew you need a flame of some sort. So I was planning on putting one of these down there near the window... and a fan in the window to help circulation. The wife (who is smarter than me) didn't hesitate to say "no", and basically laughed in my face that I would consider it.
Or more likely one w/ a stand.

Yeah...I'd advise against that. Get some sort of electric range down there instead. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

Do you need an ACTUAL flame? And for how long (just to bring something to a boil?)?
If all you need to do is bring something to a boil and not sustain a temperature for a long time, get an electric hot plate and stay down there with it (don't leave it unattended and burn the house down) _________________ The end is nigh! I need enough BTUs to boil this 50 quart stainless pot I just purchased for more money than I'd like to post on here. Its too big for an electric range. I thought I'd get the big one to save in the long run, and now I'm just wishing that I would've gon ewith the 30 quart pot. _________________

And typically I need to sustain a boil for 60-90 minutes. So, I'm guessing that wifey is right, this is a horribly stupid idea. _________________

Unfortunately, you do have to sustain a long boil and it can be of as much as 5 gallons of liquid, which is why gas tends to be preferred. Very hard to keep that kind of boil rolling with electric. However, given dick's situation, its electric or bust. Or at the very least a full gas range with ventilation, which is obviously going to be pretty expensive, especially considering that he probably doesn't have hook-ups for it down there.
Some brewers use heating sticks but you run the risk of a wort scorch with the direct contact to the liquid. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

dick, if you don't get my private message, please let me know...A BBQ grill in the basement, from my experience, is not a good idea _________________ where-ever you get it - there you have it. - Anon. |

I wonder if you could get an immersible heating element... that you put into the pot and bring it to a boil... Like a really heavy duty aquarium heater... or like the heating element in an electric water heater _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! how long does this evaporation process take dick? you can use natural gas. anyone with a gas stove knows that you can use the oven for hours and as far as I know there is no chimney and no one died.
do you have a detached garage with a gas line?
You can also crack a window open a bit to get oxygen in and fumes out.
when and if you do get a batch made, let a couple of wino's have the first few bottles in case it gets someone sick or dead.

I don't think that batch of beer would turn out very well. _________________
