One of the best offensive players in the NHL has been traded to the Devils, who are in the Pens division. This is interesting because the Devils have been extremely successful relying on a trap style defense, along with their backbone, goalie Martin Brodeur. Considering that Kovalchuk is famous for not playing defense or hustling, he becomes a free agent at the end of the year (remember what Hossa did), and the Devils are currently in 2nd place, I really question this move. They gave up rookie Nick Bergfors, who has killed the Pens this season, and one of the greatest sports names ever, Johnny Oduya (OH-DO-YA), along w/ a prosect who was captain of the Canadian junior team, and a first round pick. Thats a lot. Reports say that Kovalchuk turned down $101 million to stay in Atlanta. That is also a lot.
Quote: | The New Jersey Devils have won the Ilya Kovalchuk sweepstakes, acquiring the superstar winger from the Atlanta Thrashers on Thursday night.
The Devils have struggled of late, especially scoring goals. Devils GM Lou Lamoriello didn't hesitate, swooping in and acquiring the biggest rental player available on this year's trade market.
In exchange, the Thrashers get rookie forward Niclas Bergfors, defenseman Johnny Oduya, prospect Patrice Cormier and a first-round pick in this year's draft.
