Rented it and will be playing it through this weekend; goal is to have it done Monday. Never played the first one. I wanted to but they didn't have it a Lackluster Video and I'm not going to buy it since the reviews all said it was only worth a rental. I just wikipediad the story so I'd be caught up.

Game is pretty sweet so far but the controls feel a little "loose." Maybe I just need to get into it more. I like that I can bang random chicks and run through crowds of people with wild abandon, knocking old men and ladies carrying crates of vegetables onto the ground or down the stairs. I also like that after I beat 5 or 6 douches up, I can loot them while they roll on the ground whimpering. And I like that I'm basically a 17th century Italian Neo from the Matrix, pretty much able to walk up the sides of buildings and jump crazy distances.

So, my opinion thus far is its a blast and at least worth a rental, but they left some room for improvement on controls.

This game is on PS3 and XLax360, btw.

So now that I've got significantly more play in, I can safely say that the controls, while at times frustrating and perhaps overly complex, do not take away at all from the fun of this game. There are so many ways to play it never gets old.

Is it still a rent only kind of game? I've been thinking about getting this, or one of the Medal of Honor games.

We've got every Medal of Honor game! Of course, I've never played, but my kids have hours upon hours racked up.

If I had the money lying around, I would buy it. It may not be a forever keeper, but I would get more than my money's worth out of it before potentially trading it in...like 5 years from now. As it stands, I'm not going to be done with it by the time I need to return it, so I'm going to have to rent it again. Its a very long game for the story mode.

BTW, you don't need to have played the first one to play this one, but I do feel a little out of the loop on the overall story. I used wikipedia to get a sense of the first game's story and that helped.

So I've basically decided I'm going to buy this game because its that sweet. And I'll probably pick up the first one for cheap somewhere too. It wasn't supposed to be as good so I wouldn't be buying it for full price, but since its old and I can probably get it used, it'll be worth it to catch up on the story.

BTW, the story......crazy deep.

Yeah, I bought it. Been playing it practically non-stop the last couple days. Its long and has a lot of side-missions to do. What I really like about it is that you can buy new armor and weapons and learn new abilities, so the game opens up for you as you play, but you also take to the controls more as you play so you become better as the player. Even after getting some of the better abilities, I still used to have to run if I was fighting more than 2 or 3 guys at once; now, I can walk into a crowd of as many as 8 and have 6 on the ground before the other 2 even draw their swords.

My hubby is not sure if he wants Assasin's Creed II or Modern Warfare II...

Well it really depends on if he's more into first person shooters and wants some good online play (MW2) or if he's looking for a good single player experience with an enthralling story (AC2). I tend to go for the latter on console games because I prefer to do my online first person shooter playing on my computer; the console controls suck in comparison IMO.

So I beat the holy hell out of this game, got all the achievement, all the armor etc., but I still have a few side missions to do and I'm still playing because its that much fun. Assassination missions are the best, especially ones where you have to pick off a single guy in a group of guards. You can either stealthily snag him and then flee, or take the whole group out. I like to sneak up, nail the target, and then act like I'm going to run, but instead draw the guards down a dead end, where I finish them.

So I bought the first AC off ebay for like $15 and its worth about that much. Its a good game I guess, but not even close to the sequel. It does have some cool things about it that makes me glad I own it and also glad I got it cheap; the story is cooler and more interesting overall and I like the setting of this one better.

Of course, you can't swim in the first one (you can in the second one, and thank god for that since like half the game takes place in Venice). And of course, one part of the game is set out in a harbor where you have to jump from pier pylon to pier pylon repeatedly. One missed jump...in the drink. The jumping mechanics of both AC games are sketchy at best. I can't tell you how many times in both games I'm running and jumping in a perfectly straight line and all of a sudden, player dude hooks a hairpin right for no understandable reason into the harbor or off a twelve story building into the streets below. Now, this isn't a huge problem in the second game or the first normally because player dude can sustain a pretty decent fall without dying, healing is easy and cheap and in the second one, you can swim. But that harbor mission was a bitch. There's nothing worse than a game that punishes you for its poor mechanics, and for that one short segment, AC1 was doing that.

An aside: you can enjoy AC2 without playing the first IMO. You miss out on a little story, but nothing important. Also, both of these games are basically about how religion is a centuries old plot by a secret society to control the masses. So atheists will enjoy it.
