Is it right that revenue generated by Pennsylvania's casinos is diverted to public works projects rather than tax relief?

In a round about way, the casino money is reducing some real estate taxes. Say your municipality needs improvements to its building that would cost $100,000. They can either raise your taxes a mil or two or three to raise money to do the repairs, or they can apply for the slots grant and your taxes remain the same.
Also, there will be changes to the money distribution soon whereby each and every Washington County municipality will be receiving $25,000 plus $10 per resident (up to 50% of the municipality's budget). This again, will help keep taxes steady or even (we can always hope), reduce them.
So to answer the question, it's six of one and a half dozen of the other. _________________ -amom

The so called casino money is only a pretext to lowering taxes. |

It should continue to go directly to the taxpayer! How many of those pet projects were never thought of until the free money came available? _________________

I totally agree with this. Lots of the projects are only proposed since "free" money is possible. Some, if not all, of these type of projects won't get done if the grant is not awarded. And while we are talking about it, I don't have a problem with municipalities and related municipal non-profit organizations applying for and receiving slots money but the hospitals??! What nerve! _________________ -amom

I don't care what they do with the money. I haven't lost anything there so its not my money. I haven't applied for tax break either. |
