Well, the issue I'm talking about is making "nonprofits" pay property taxes. Let's stick to the subject. _________________

I'm confused, (not a surprise), but explain "non-profits" again, I know churches etc, , Public Schools, State Schools.
I guess you mean private schools, and I can see your point, but are they classified as "non-profit" for tax purposes? and do they make , or are they allowed to make a profit?
I am guessing that any profits should result in lower tuitions, scholarships, etc. to be qualify as tax exempt. |

Bus, I'm just talking about entities such as hospitals, private educational institutions and churches. Those would be my three targets for property taxation or, at the very least, a set system for charging fees in lieu of taxes. _________________

OK, but if they were to pay taxes, all they would do is to increase the price of their services , churches will not happen any time soon, but as we become more godless as a nation(10-20 years, probably won't be any churches) so that will be a moot issue. |

I truly believe the college and the hospital are killing Washington by taking so much real property off the tax rolls..
I under stand the whole non-profit thing, but when the hospital buys a house, rents it, and collects rent off it, are they or are they not for profit? _________________

In my opinion, there should be no exemptions. Some can better afford it than others. But W&J should be able to manage. As I recall, they have an endowment of more than $100 million. |
Rather that charge clooege students who rarely use city services lets tax those who use them the most, the welfare class ( drugies and alcoholoics)and the bars where they all hang out and shoot each other.
I do agree with you problem with college endowments, they are all too large. The state governemt should require that thye spent 25% of the endowments each year or tax that % at a reqular income rate for use at the local level. _________________ George |

Isn't that the job of the mayor and city council along with the Redevelopment Authority that has millions to spend yearly? _________________ George |

Brant wrote: | Good point, Dick, about the colleges tacking on big charges to pad their take. But of course, they just couldn't put a $50 per student municipal services charge on there. Ohhhhh, nooooo. That would scare off prospective students. Yeah, right. |
Where do you get your $50 rate at? the rates I saw ranged from $27 for CCAC, $125 for Pitt, Carlow aDuquesne and Point Park up to $400 for CMU. Since CMU and W& J have similar tuition rates I suspect W&J would be $400 as well. The rest of the people who work in Pisttsburgh, or Washington only pay $52/yr for the same privliage. doesn't seem fair when you compare prices. _________________ George |

So has Washington County. The property W&J has purchased over the last 10 years was mostly run down and had a low tax rate anyway. Remember, some of their property is in East Washington but they aren't bitching. They have maintined property values and can attrach high income residents, unlike Washington. _________________ George |

George, it's my recollection that W&J was approached by the city and asked to impose a $50 fee on each student to cover municipal services and benefits. The college told them to pound sand. _________________
