The truth is if marijuana was legalized, it wouldn't change the every day lives of 90% of the population in any way. To me that's a major litmus test of whether or not something should be illegal. Does creating a freedom infringe on another person's freedom? In the case of violent crimes like rape, murder and robbery, its an obvious yes. In the case of lesser illegalities like drug use, its a no. The question then arises, is it worthwhile to prosecute and punish this crime? You have to balance the cost of prosecution and incarceration against the perceived effect on society. And beyond strictly moral objections, which are always subjective, there is no negative effect on society from private responsible drug use in one's own home. Now if you want to question public drug use or operating motor vehicles under the influence of a substance, that's a whole different argument. But just the possession and ingestion of substances doesn't affect anyone other than the user. This is why people can smoke cigarettes and drink to excess in their own homes legally. Legislating purely moral issues ultimately never works out. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

It gets better:

"Government Issues Medical Marijuana Guidelines"
Quote: | Patients prescribed marijuana for medical purposes and their licensed suppliers "will not be a priority" of federal prosecutors in states that have legalized the practice, the Justice Department said Monday.
The guidance from the department came in the form of a three-page memo that directed federal agents to take a hands-off approach to cases in which no state laws are broken.
Prosecutors "should not focus federal resources in your states on individuals whose actions are in clear and unambiguous compliance with existing state laws providing for the medical use of marijuana," the memo said.
