Did you ever smell something that immediately conjured up a long-ago memory? I just walked through our lunchroom, caught a quick whiff of something and instantly thought of Winky's, the old hamburger joint that used to be on Jefferson Avenue in Washington. I know. Weird. _________________

Smell is supposed to be the sense most closely tied to memory _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

There are certain smells, different lotions and perfumes, that instantly bring memories of my grandmother to me. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

When my grandfather died, all I wanted was his work hat. The smell of it brought me comfort and instant memories. I still have the hat, but the scent is gone. _________________ -amom

Ah, Winky's. My best friend in high school worked there for a few years. i'd go in & order a soda, he'd give me a tray full of Winky's broasted chicken. _________________ "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." ~Martin Luther King Jr.

Thats funny this thread started today. Earlier this morning, one of my guys cut a piece of grating with our partner saw. The burning smell he brought in took me back to this memory of those track cars you controlled with little trigger. I could never keep them on the track. Then again I was younger than nine throughout the '80's
Remember these? We had one set up on our ping pong table for a few years when I was growing up.

I had a couple of those racetracks, and I remember that smell. It was an electrical smell similar to what you got from the control box for model trains. And about that picture. Is it just me, or does that guy on the right look like the dude from "Jon and Kate Plus Eight"? _________________

I remember my grandfather telling me to "clean" the metal leads on the track with a dime to keep a good connection between them and the car... I had two tracks... one that just went in a circle and another that had a loop with a cut out in the top... so the car would span about 3 inches and not be on the track at all...
God those things were awesome... do they still sell those? I gotta get one now _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

I had an elaborate one that involved two jeeps racing through Incan ruins. There was a door that counted the laps each car made and when one car hit lap 5 or something, the door shut, causing the other to crash. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. [quote="Brant"]I had a couple of those racetracks, ]
Back in the mid-fifties, I was stationed at Amarillo, Texas. A few times I would drive to Pa. on leave (32-36 hours ,route 66 to 40 in St.Louis, no stopping except to gas up or eat).
There was a diner in Ill. that had a stage where a race track was set up above the grill thing and if for a dime, two cars would race. The same car did not win all the time either and they went fast.
On route 66 about half way through Missouri was another diner that had the cutest thing I ever saw. It had a pretty big stage above the dining area on the rear wall and seated was a full orchestra of seated dolls like in a symphony, with instuments.
When someone played the jukebox, they went into full playing mode, conductor lead the group, arms moved, trombone slid, drumer moved, etc., fascinating as all get out.
They played for Elvis, Dean Martin, Patti Page or who ever was singing. They knew the music to every song on that jukebox. |

It was always a good place to go after a few beverages. Of course, there were always those rumors floating around that they used horse meat. _________________

Bus, I used to make a lot of trips home when I was stationed in D.C., but I didn't run into any of that fun stuff, just the Amoco truck stop in Breezewood. _________________
