Can we agree that there has been groups who have attempted to defame EVERY SC nominee in the last thirty years?

Yes, SCOTUS nominees seem to be a lighting rod for political jackassery from both sides of the aisle.

So far as it's typical in American public discourse for some group, somewhere, to disparage and defame just about any other personage or perspective, yes, i can agree. i think the general problem is that all too often some of the loudest criticisms are given far more credence than is warranted by any available facts.

To cite just one current example, Orly Taitz and the birthers. Given their outright lies, unsupported claims, and the often racist undertones of some of their rhetoric, i don't think it's defamation at all to call them whackjobs and lunatics.
