DETROIT (AP) - A Detroit planning department employee has sued the city because she claims a coworker's strong fragrance prohibits her from working. Susan McBride's lawsuit was filed yesterday in US District Court in Detroit.

McBride claims she is severely sensitive to perfumes and other cosmetics. The lawsuit states the co-worker wore a strong scent and plugged in a scented room deodorizer which caused McBride to go home sick.

The woman later agreed to stop using the room deodorizer but continued wearing perfume.

The suit says her work environment violates the Americans with Disabilities Act. McBride is asking for a ban on such scents at work and unspecified damages.

I think its appropriate to ask that the perfume be banned. However, I don't see grounds for extra damages; that's asking to put a rule in place and then make it retroactive and punish for past offenses.

A simple question, deserving of a simple answer.

How did we handle this situation prior to this "touchy feely" bullchit decision????

HR or someone in management should have dealt with this. There is no reason that this should be a lawsuit. But they didn't... and now it is.

To phony: In the past, the person would have had to resign from their job. Or beat the crap out them until they stopped wearing the purfume.

I'd like to outlaw people even visiting my office who smell like an aftershave commercial or a whore house. When you can taste the perfume/aftershave after the person leaves, they overdid it slightly doncha think.

Yeah... that whole "tasting the aftershave" part could be taken the wrong way Smile Smile Smile

I limit my aromatic embellishment to two tablespoons of Brute, per day. No more, no less...

And yes, I am kidding.

Oh, so because someone attempts to hide a disgusting case of BODY ODOR, they should be subjected to harrassment by some stupid wonderful person broad who claims (all of a sudden to have an perfume allergy) that she can't work under these conditions?

Whoa! That caught me off guard. You're sticking up for the person who wore a urinal ring around their neck? I know that my company (and most) have a personal hygene policy (which I recently had to address with an employee.. awkward!). Nobody has a "case of BODY ODOR". They just have to shower. There is no effing reason to smell like the candle section at Hallmark.

I can't stand strong perfume.

You must be a stinker to immediately jump to this conclusion.

Urinal Ring? LOL!

I've heard of "Parfume de Toilette" but that's really taking it literally!

Ok phony-she should take a baseball bat and knock the offending air freshner off the damn wall. She should then grab the offending employee from behind, apply a choke hold and squeeze the life completely out of her.
How is that for a NON "touchy-feely" answer?

Amom, I would bet your whole tomato crop for this summer you do NOT know what a house like that smells like. Laughing

There was this woman who worked at our place in Cleveland,Ohiowho had to have been buying her perfume in 55 gallon drums because she wore so much.

Her office was in the back and the place was long and narrow(like over 1200 feet long and less then 200 feet wide), so we had a west aisle and an east aisle from front to back. the air flow was from back to the front.

When she was coming to the front, in less then a minute, everyone working toward the front knew she was coming.

The funny/wierd part is, one of the guys working there was on vacation going through Iowa and stopped at a diner for lunch. When he walked in he told his wife that the smell in there reminded him a lot of the woman at work.

Can you guess who was seated two tables away from him? Laughing

More stupidity from Phony...I personally know people that get really sick from strong perfume. One of my friends gets such a bad migraine from strong perfumes, that she actually vomits. Like Dick said, HR should've handled it.
