WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A measure to give some 57 million elderly people, veterans and persons with disabilities a $250 check was rejected by the Senate on Wednesday, a setback for the powerful seniors' lobby.

President Barack Obama has called for Congress to approve the payments to make up for their benefits not increasing this year, but the Senate defeated it 50 to 47.

These are tough times for all of us. I would have voted against that, too. As I recall, the reason they didn't get raises in their benefits was that the cost-of-living index that is used did not go up by the required amount. They need to tighten their belts like everyone else is doing.

And I've mentioned this before, will a one-time $250 check really make or break an individual's financial condition?

Probably not, but will they survive yet another failed promise come election day? I know if I was a Repub running for a Dem's seat; I could pick up a ton of SS votes exploiting this issue. Embarassed

Nothing pizzs a person off more then messing with their money. This will easily neutralize the Bunning fiasco for the Repubs.

How much did their COL come to, and they average 3-400,000 month?

Some say they work hard for the money, and unless they pass a bill rejecting it, members of the U.S. Congress will get $4,700 cost-of-living (COLA) raise beginning in January 2009. The average member of Congress will realize a 2.8 percent raise, bringing his or her annual salary to $174,000. The raises for congress will cost taxpayers $2.5 million during 2009.
