WASHINGTON (AP) -- The number of newly laid-off workers filing applications for unemployment benefits unexpectedly surged last week after having fallen sharply in the previous week. The gain dampened hopes about how quickly the labor market may improve this year.
The Labor Department said Thursday that first-time claims for unemployment benefits rose by 31,000 to a seasonally adjusted 473,000.
The increase followed a drop of 41,000 in the previous week which had raised hopes that the labor market could be improving. There have been 8.4 million jobs lost since the recession began in December 2007.

Well, Abomb!, if we could just get Al Gore to release some of that pent-up "GLOBAL WARMING" it could have a positive effect on the employment numbers.....
The weekly numbers are also muddied by the ripple effects of last week's record-setting Mid-Atlantic snowstorms.
Analysts say the closing of businesses and government offices may have prevented some newly unemployed workers from filing their initial claims.
These data were collected as the government gathered information for the February report on the unemployment rate and employer payrolls. The severe weather may distort those figures, too, economists said. That could make it hard to get an accurate picture of the job market for several weeks.
Some experts say the snowstorms may have cost the economy as many as 100,000 jobs in February. Government hiring for the census also could be delayed.

There was a global economy bubble in the financial industry for decades leading up to the crash. But I don't expect a retarded person to understand what an over inflated economy is.

P.S. I just laid off my help. He will be opening his claim next week... +1 for phony.
When I get busy next month, I will hire both of my guys back. Then we can count those as "new jobs".

Why don't you apply for "stimulas" money especially since we are in a state of emergency now and hire those two, plus two more?

Starting in 2007 we were losing over 700,000 jobs each month. Since President Obama took office in 2009 that number has decreased. The number of jobs lost in January 2010 was roughly 20,000. That's quite a change in the monthly rate in just one year.

amph-those numbers are a little skewed. If you had four million apples and I took away 700,000 a month soon there would fewer apples to lose, right? If Obama wants my support he needs to post jobs GAINED-something which he has failed at thus far.
