My wife and I are playing a game this morning in which we try to guess which vehicles will make it up the hill past our house. It's slicker than owl poop on a flat rock today. If you don't have to go out this morning, the wise thing is to stay at home.

My wife made it 4 houses down before she had to pull over and wait for half an hour before coming home for an hour... she finally made it to work...
Of course, I haven't been to sam's to get salt yet... did you know that fireplace ashes work REALLY good on getting traction on an icy driveway? I needed to clean that out anyway

We have a parking lot in the big open area at the foot of our driveway as drivers figured out they couldn't make it and decided to pull off. Several people went off the road. One was ditched half on and half off, and a while later, a pickup truck that couldn't stop or steer ran into it. Fortunately, a very slow-speed crash. Seems like it's all better now.

What kills me, are all these guys out here who were deadass stuck and still spinning around like it was some kind of freaking competition...
It's 8 o'clock, Sunday morning for crissake...I just want to know how driving a two ton vehicle, on roads that are too slippery to stand on, can
allow this mental midget to feel he is qualified to pose for MachoMan
calendar...?

Showing your age here E, back in the "yonder days" everyone had an ash pile(because most everyone had a coal furnace/stove-'s, and that is pretty much how local streets, and sidewalks were treated for snow/ice.
And those wood ashes from your fireplace, EMPTY EVERY ASH ONTO YOUR GARDEN and till it under in the spring. |

Hey bus, that's why I had the bucket on the porch! Wood ash is a great way to replenish nitrogen in the garden.
Down where my grandma lives in greene county, they still treat the roads with cinders and ash...

I know and it really makes a mess on your vehicle, as does salt. Used to use the freeway in Cleveland to go back and forth to work, had a brownish tan car that was dirty whitish gray most of the winter and a roundish clear space on the windshield where the wipers went. |

Salt = $45/ton
Why do you think cinders are used? Simple economics. Plus they work in any temperature, while salt quits lower than maybe 15 degrees.
We left home this morning about 9:30 for breakfast and had no driving problems. But then, we live southeast of WashPA.

next week: because of this ice today and a demand for cinders .
Cinders and ash =$75 a ton
Salt=$100 a ton.
usually how it works when someone becomes aware of how cheap cinders are. |

FYI, saw an ad in Post-Gazette 2 days ago ,where a company has rock salt $78 a ton delivered.
It was the last ad ,I think, in the want ads section, meant to let you know that yesterday. |
