When I use it, its NEVER in reference to someone who's actually mentally disabled. I guess I'm trying to make it a non-offensive word by using it in a non-offensive manner. I actually use it sometimes in the way people use "sick" or "nasty" to describe stuff as being especially cool, like, "Troy Polamalu's skills in the secondary are retarded good." Doesn't make sense at all, but most slang doesn't.

One of the episodes of South Park this season was all about the etymology of the word "homosexual". Their point was that in the last ten years its meaning has changed away from a gay slur, and, in the context of the show, it referred to loud, annoying bikers

I was being deliberately obnoxious with it... but yeah, I never refer to a disabled person as retarded or a retard... One of the points I made in my argument was something along the line of "would you have clicked this if it just said 'guy plays cool music'"

Clearly, the guy in the video is a goofy dude, but he is probably not mentally challenged or otherwise handicapped... and his beats are retarded awesome

Yeah, I still never use that word or the version with the -got extension because I am aware of the offensive nature, but I am always a little sad because its such a funny sounding word. When amongst very close friends, me and my buddies used to use it, in no way referring to homosexuality, as a means of giving each other a hard time. But its more important to me to be respectful to others than to use a silly word, so I refrain from using it anymore.

With the -got extension, it really takes on a whole new meaning. Definitely up there with the n-word. I still use the front part when I'm hanging out with my friends. Oh well. Its never meant as anything derogatory.
