The CDC has a weekly report available online that tracks reports of Influenza Like Illness (ILI) which includes H1N1 (Swine) flu. They also maintain this site which has lots of sensible and accurate info, including an interactive map to see what the reports are where you live.

Oooh, that reminds me... I need to find that google trends thing we talked about last year... that maps search queries for disease related terms to predict outbreaks

Two confirmed swine flu deaths this week were reported in today's Albuquerque Journal. One an infant in Roosevelt county, and one a five year old girl in the town of Rio Rancho, just about a mile west of us. That brings the New Mexico swine flu numbers to 7 dead and 86 hospitalizations. What apparently has local health officials on alert the most is that the flu season is progressing several weeks earlier and faster than usual in years past. Here's the report from the NM Independent (the Journal requires subscription to read online articles.)

The little girl in Rio Rancho was healthy on Saturday, complained of nausea Sunday evening then started vomiting, passed away in a nearby ER Monday evening. Doctors report that she had "no fever, no cough, no runny nose, no symptoms of flu other than nausea." Tests confirmed her illness as H1N1 yesterday. So sad. Crying or Very sad

Let's just continue practicing cleanliness and take lots of vitamins and avoid contact to those with virus so we can prevent swine flu. There is already an available vaccine and its not as deadly as we think so we don't need to worry too much. But then again, its is our health we are talking about so we really need to take good care of our immune system.

Hey yinz. I would strongly recommend getting the vaccine if you can. We have it in my office now and I plan to get it very soon; many of my colleagues got it literally the moment it was available. Many people in my office (mostly 20 and 30-somethings) got swine flu in September-October and while no one had any serious complications, it sucked for each and every one of them. The pregnant ladies were really concerned, but fortunately were able to get vaccine or at least prophylactic Tamiflu. I work on health research policy, and I truly believe the vaccine is very safe and effective. Of course, you should talk to your doctor and do your own research, but I'm just sayin'. It might not be the end of the world, but the flu sucks whether it's swine or bird or regular or otherwise. Many of us mistake bad colds for the flu, so that when we actually get the flu, we are shocked at how miserable it really is. And swine flu has some unexpected effects on the young and healthy.

The three best ways to protect yourself from this current threat and any that may follow are: 1) maintain a potent immune system; 2) use common sense measures to protect yourself; and 3) encourage the same in those around you. If we’re fortunate, this “Swine Flu” will come and go without serious consequence. But even if that’s the case, there may be similar challenges in the future. So, the most effective defense we have as individuals is to prepare the immune system for whatever challenges may come.
