Is your family affected by dementia or Alzheimer's disease?

Yes. My father has Parkinson's-associated Dementia and was recently moved into a nursing home after a fall. The extent and progression of the dementia became undeniable to my Mum and the rest of us after he fell several months ago. The fall affected his ability to walk safely and he moved beyond our ability to care for him at home.
My partner's Mom, who moved in with us back in May, has Alzheimers. _________________ "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." ~Martin Luther King Jr.

My maternal grandmother was a retired schoolteacher, sharp as a tack. She went from being seemingly totally in control of her faculties one day to walking in the dead of night in her nightgown and bedroom slippers to the local firehouse to report that her house was on fire. It was not. With some people, it can be a slow progression. With others, it's almost overnight. _________________

So the question is inevitably raised...if this many of us have this in our family history and are therefore at risk to experience it ourselves, and if we assume that we can reach on agreement on how they are acquired (ie, through means other than embryos), should we not all be in favor of advancing stem sell research as soon as possible? _________________ The end is nigh! Yes, but i think that as a society we always need to concurrently engage in substantive discourse about ethical issues that arise - including the ethical dilemma of delaying needed research and subsequent treatment in order for political points to be scored. _________________ "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." ~Martin Luther King Jr.
