Stats, when referring to basketball, are Points, Rebounds, FG%, Steals etc. I wouldn't call the reputation of a coaching staff or an injury at measurable "stat". However, yes, external factors are obviously a major factor when breaking down a game. I'd say even moreso than the season's statistics. _________________

And that's all I'm saying. Maybe this kid was able to wrap his head around all these factors and make better guesses because of them. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

What about the distance each team has to travel to get to the game? What about the proximity of fans to the game? And the reputation of teams to win or lose if they are playing with fans present? And their reputation of each team's coaching staff? And who is injured? And how each team plays when they have an injury? Its a lot more complex than just points and boards. Pretty sure there is no agreed upon objective formula for which stats are most important and which are just details. |

The Final Score . Winning is everthing, winning the stats is like getting KOed in a boxing match, and feeling good cause you got more punches in before you got knocked on your azz. |

And exactly how do you determine the "final score" statistic prior to the game? _________________

So it turns out that the pool that kid is in has brackets you can edit after the games have been played. His brother runs the pool they are in. No one is calling foul yet, but IMO sounds like it could be made up. Oh well, it was fun to believe it anyway. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Well, as I recall, the kid picked Purdue to win it all. Oops. _________________

His bracket is already busted. He's missed a few since his story came out. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

Yep, once they said the brackets could be edited after the fact, it was too obvious. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

When you've been in the newspaper business as long as I have, you develop tremendous cynicism, a gift for sarcasm and a pretty good bullcrap detector. _________________
