Try Tiger Direct. NAS with esata wouldn't really make sense. The point of a NAS is to have it available on the network. Esata by default would have to go through one of you machines. That means if the machine was off, you wouldn't have access to that drive. Defeats the purpose of NAS which is why they don't do it that way. The speed difference between the two formats is really negligible anyway. Ethernet might be a tad faster in fact, depending on the speed of each machine's card and the bandwidth of your router.

The reason for wanting both is that I want to be able to dump stuff onto it from my computer and then access it with another device through ESATA... I can't really explain why other than the fact that I have a NAS drive on the network already... and I have a device that can access media on network drives AND an ESATA port... and can be used to copy files from one drive to another... and I only have one more open ethernet port open on my router, which I have reserved for yet another device Smile--- so, if I put another NAS drive in there, it would take that last ethernet port, and I would have an un-utilized ESATA port on my Asus O!Play (which drives me crazy... OCD)...

Well, you can run esata off a tower and share it. It will be available on the network as long as the tower it is attached to is on and file sharing is allowed, but you will have to do a little network navigation from other devices to find it as well. It probably won't show up in the default network spaces until you locate it first.

Neah... no tower, no need for one in this setup.

I'm probably just going to run with ESATA... most at least have a USB 2.0 port as well or a combo port so when ESATA is finally obsolete, my drive won't be... not that it is serving any other purpose than a dump pit for movies and tv shows Smile

You were right... 320 wasn't nearly enough... especially once I discovered Blu-Ray ISO rips (6-8gb movie files) Smile Smile

Here's the deal... when I download a movie or rip a dvd, the first stop that file is going to is the 320 gb NAS drive. From there, I can play that on the tv with the O!play from the comfort of my couch with my remote. When it's done, or whenever I think about it, I can use the O!play to copy "watched" stuff from the NAS drive to the "big" drive connected via ESATA. So, eventually, I will have 1tb of media that I've watched, that is available to watch again... and it's not "on the internet" at all (not even on my network, except THROUGH my digital media player device thing)... And I will have a 320gb drive that will always ONLY have stuff on it that I haven't watched yet.

And I will have a bunch of pretty LED lights and imposing looking monoliths of metal and plastic in my entertainment center that will make the living room look like a space ship when the lights are off Smile

esata is much newer than usb 2. Probably usb 2 will be obsolete before it is.

Of course I was.

Re: ESATA's obsolescence-

http://news.cnet.com/8301-30685_3-20000088-264.html

Now... I went through a big thing with Comcast... that resulted in me getting a better cable package for 40 bucks LESS per month than I paid before... and it only took a week of hassle and us unnecessarily turning in our old cable box... well, we had to have a new box delivered, so I took that opportunity to request one with an active firewire port (cable companies are required to provide this if you ask)---

Now, what to do with it??? I was thinking of rigging up a DVR, but it's harder than it sounds... it requires a dedicated computer... and it would suck compared to "real" DVR's like TIVO or even the one I can get from Comcast for like 10 bucks a month.

And I hardly watch any TV... I just like playing with the gadgets Smile

That article you posted points out that esata will likely become obsolete when USB 3 comes out...which would replace USB 2...which means esata will outlast USB 2. You cannot defeat me, young padawan.

You are just looking at chronology... USB 3.0 will probably be backward compatible with USB 2.0 (and 1.0?) which are UBIQUITOUS today... It will simply have the advantage of speed... which is the advantage that ESATA has now, yet it is not ubiquitous... in fact, it hasn't really caught on. I would argue that it will NOT outlast USB 2.0 because people will continue using 2.0 until they buy a new computer with 3.0... possibly NEVER having used ESATA.

Either way, I don't care. I just need a big ole' metal brick for movies.

Whoa! Awesome gift idea, there... I could get people an O!Play and then just give them 8gb thumb drives with copies of my movies on them... sweet Smile

Well, yes, 3 will be backwards compatible with 2, but only physically. Buying a device that uses 2 now will not mean you can use 3 speeds when it comes out later. That device will always be 2 fast and so will anything else that connects to it.

Of course, I'd still go with the NAS. Just stack another router on top of the one you already have.

I could do that... Now that I think about it... the Roku has Wi-Fi, but I hardwired it because technically, that should be slightly faster than wi-fi, but I'm sure it's not enough to notice...

Bleh, it will come down to whatever is cheaper and looks more badazz at the precise moment that I actually need to buy it.

E, Comcast just added a bunch of useless crap to their DVR , and I mean useless. They,of course, still can only record two programs at once and you will have to be watching one of them. ATT allows you to record four.

Since they did that, (last fall)I am on my fifth DVR box, (they have no new boxes, so you will get a "refurbished" one).

Some of the problems:
The box will delete programs you have set to record no help from you. You won't know it until you go to watch what you thought you recorded. You do this by selecting "My DVR History" and there it will be with the message," Program deleted by the System" and that is it, no one at Comcast knows why that happens.

Picture on you screen freezes and nothing will free it until the DVR eventually frees it, not even with tech sending signals) so far 7 minutes, but until it reaches that stage, you will get a black screen for a second or so several times while you are watching.

When scrolling the menu with the remote, very often you may be on ch.3,4,5,6,7, and then goes to 503, 117, or where ever it wants to with no help fom you.

Sometimes, but rarely, you get a "green screen", nothing works, and you must unplug the DVR for a minute, and put the plug back it and that resets the box. downside, it takes nearly 24 hours to reload the "Menu" and till then "To BE Announced" is all you see in the menu.

The real beauty in this new and improved DVR software, as you are watching what you recorded and go to fast forward through commercials, , it doesn't stop when you do, it stops where it thinks you want to stop(God's truth, the tech fixing the last one told me) and that is usually where you started the re-wind, so you to do it all over again. I found it less annoying to go on past the program you are watching and miss a minute or so then to go back through it again.
I am guessing you don't have a DVR, and warning you ahead of time .

I only wish FIOS was available here, I'd be gone so fast from Comcast

You are right, I don't have a dvr... Like I said, I don't watch much TV... if I am going to watch something, I want it to be what I want, when I want it... and if that's the case, chances are, I have it (from the interwebz)... so I have no need for a DVR unless I can rig one up without "leasing" the functionality from Comcast...

Which I can do... and will probably do when I get a new computer and retire the mac mini to the entertainment center.

One more day of tech support, one more day of me still not being able to do important parts of my job. Tomorrow is round 2 with Adobe, but I'll be in a meeting for most of the day so at least it'll be someone else on the phone with them instead of me.

So they basically wiped my computer clean and started from scratch. In the process of reinstalling everything now. Hopefully it was worth it, because I'll have to redo all my settings.

My computer went all Toyota gas pedal on me and turned to crap. I can't do basically anything with it. The mouse moves all around on its own, clicking at random. The keyboard is responsive 50% of the time at best.
