Beer Theories

Sometimes when I reflect on all the beer I drink, I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. I think, "It is better to drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."

Babe Ruth
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day."
Lyndon B. Johnson
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading."

Paul Horning
~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I think not."
H. L. Mencken
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"When we drink, we get drunk. When we get drunk, we fall asleep. When we fall asleep, we commit no sin When we commit no sin, we go to heaven. So, let's all get drunk and go to heaven!"

George Bernard Shaw
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."
Benjamin Franklin
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza."
Dave Barry

To some it's a six-pack, to me it's a Support Group Salvation in a can!

Leo Durocher
~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One night at Cheers, Cliff Clavin explained the" Buffalo Theory" to his buddy Norm:
"Well, ya see, Norm, it's like this. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members! ; In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine! That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers."
So I'm in Baltimore (for a wedding) and just got back from dinner at one of my fav restaurants, La Tasca. Its a Spanish Tapas (which people always hear as Spanish Topless...perverts) restaurant. Naturally I had a Spanish beer. My first one actually. It was called Alhambra. It was a lager. It was okay. Basically a Euro Pale. Nothing special, but worth a mention as my first Cerveza de Espana.
Quote:
Today I found out about a beer with 41% ABV. BrewDog created the beer mostly because one of their competitors brewed a 40% ABV beer. The company also brews a 32% ABV beer called "Tactical Nuclear Penguin." After the brewery was criticized for brewing to strong of beers by alcohol awareness groups, they responded with "Nanny State" a 1.1% ABV. No question here, just more of a public service announcement for any beer enthusiasts on Deadspin.
I will drink this beer. Here's a video detailing more about Tactical Nuclear Penguin
I can't drag the video over, but here's the website I found the above tidbit:
Fascinating. I knew about Tactical Nuclear Penguin, but sounds like this one is even stronger. I wonder if beer even tastes that good when its that strong or if its just a gimmick.
Well I hit GIANT eagle over the weekend and nabbed some beer. Grabbed a new barley wine I hadn't seen before and a 4 pack of cans (yes cans) from a Cali brewery called 21st amendment. The beer in question is a belgian ale called Monk's Blood...the name was too awesome to pass up.
I'll also be in NC this coming weekend and will no doubt bring back loads of beer since my homebrew batch skunked hard.
Also, E, they had delirium tremens at GIANT eagle when I was there (the pink elephant).
Anyway, I'm drinking a Samuel Smith imperial stout right now...which I've already had and reviewed.
I love that sam smiths imperial stout. It's delish. I need to get back into beer, I've been drinking a lot if scotch lately (a lot relative to beer consuption... Not like, a quart a day). I'm still waiting for delerium tremors to rotate into THE giant eagle
My buddy sneaked a Stone Double Bastard into the hospital that we split up into styrofoam cups. It was wonderful.
Other than that, I've been drinking my Lagunitas Hairy Eyeball... which I've decided is very Octoberfesty. And yesterday after the hockey game, I transferred my homebrew to the secondary fermenter with an ounce of nugget hops for dry hopping.
Reviewing Backburner from Southern Tier brewery out of New York. An American style imperial barley wine weighing in at 10% abv.
The primary difference between English and American barley wines is the English tends to be maltier and the American tends to be pretty hoppy. This one is no exception. Its rather similar to a big IPA. Really not that far off from Dogfish Head 90 at all, although stronger and a bit sweeter. Also thicker and a bit darker.
Pretty good beer, a good first try on the style if you haven't had, and a must try for hop heads looking for something big. Everyone else, its worth a try but you probably won't get too excited over it.
Well, as promised, I picked up some beers out of town. 5 to be exact, all of which I will be trying and reviewing over the course of the next few weeks.
However, today I'm having the last of my previous beer purchase which I have yet to review, the Monk's Blood.
This is from a brewery called 21st Amendment. I can't remember where I said it was located before, but where ever I said it was from was wrong. It is from San Francisco. I think I said it was from Indiana or something weird.
Its a Belgian style dark at 8.5% abv. Very distinct: it comes in a can.
The beer is dark with mild carbonation, dark sugars and hops in the smell, and a similar taste except that there's this weird citrus tartness coming out of nowhere in it. Its very mild and not bad, just...different. The jury might still be out on this one for me. I have a few more cans of it and will enjoy them, but I'll have to decide later whether or not I actually like this one or if I'm just humoring it.
Interesting..... to say the least. The only "good beer" that I'm aware comes in a can is Dale's Pale Ale. It hails from some mountain town in Colorado. Its made for mountain climbers in a can that can stand high altitudes. They always have it at Fat Heads if you would want to try it. It's nice and hoppy if I remember. But its been a few years.
I just started on a new case of 60 minute IPA. Very nice!
The canned beer held in the highest regard that I am aware of is Ten fidy. Its a Russian Imperial Stout and is considered one of the best if not the best there is in the style.
Never heard of Ten fidy. I'll have to check it out.
And when I said
i wasn't considering the nitro cans that Guinness, Boddingtons, and Youngs Double Chocolate use.
Having my first of 5 selections bought while out of town. Tonight's beer is called Samurai and its from Great Divide out of Colorado. Its in the style of an American Blond Ale and advertises very fondly that it uses rice.
This beer is quite the little box of tricks. It pours really really light. The lightest beer I've ever seen that wasn't a macro/light lager. That combined with the aforementioned rice tag really sets you up for a certain gamut of expectations.
The smell and taste are a 180. If you closed your eyes and had a sip, you'd swear you were drinking an ESB, a nut brown or even a stout. The taste and smell both feature toasty sugary malts and the body is surprisingly full. The only thing that reminds you of what this is is the very subtle hops and the light, fizzy carbonation.
I'm not necessarily over the moon for this beer, but its hard for me to not like just because of the sleight of hand, making me think I'm looking at a different beer than I'm drinking. Of course, it helps that its pretty good. And considering the single was only 2 bucks, you really can't complain.
Tonight's beer is number 2 of 5 from my trip. This is Shipyard Export from the Shipyard Brewing Company out of Maine. Its an American Blond Ale just like my previous selection and is 5% abv.
Pours a bit darker than the Samurai and has a smell like fresh grains. Very light and inoffensive.
Taste is really just your textbook light ale taste. Its like the primer for beer.
Very easyto drink, light, bubbly, and good taste. The thing about this beer is it didn't try to be daring in any way. As a result it comes across as very good in all ways...but highly forgettable. It has no X factor and just aims for technical points in all categories. For 2 bucks, I can't complain too much, but I probably won't have one again just because it'll never occur to me to look for one.
In less than 2 hours, I will be celebrating Saint Patty's by slamming back a huge delicious beer.
