George, it's my recollection that W&J was approached by the city and asked to impose a $50 fee on each student to cover municipal services and benefits. The college told them to pound sand.

I would have told the city that that was included in the payment made to the city in leiu of taxes. Maybe its time to cut spending!

We never get a figure from George, just a nebulous "payment in lieu of taxes" claim.

I'm not saying the college hasn't helped out the city financially. It has. But the $50 fee per student would raise about $75,000 annually that the city could count on as a funding source.

I don't run W&J or work for them so I don't know exactly what they GIVE the city. I see East Washington has released its budget for 2010 with no tax increase despite several churches and W&J in the boro.

Not a fair comparrison George-EW has a one-man-per-shift police department and no fire department.

Not even close to a fair comparison.

It is a good comparison. I am sure East Washington contracts its fire protection from Washington. The cost of that protection is set by Washington so it must be enough. As far as a police force. the crime rate in East Washington is low enough that the current force must be enough. If is wasn't there would be more.
Note the W&J has its own security force to supplement East Washington.

Brant, check it out. They're listening to you.

Lawmakers in Harrisburg are being asked to consider legislation that would strip away some of the tax benefits of being a nonprofit organization in Pennsylvania. The measure sponsored by State Sen. Wayne D. Fontana of Brookline and State Rep. Timothy J. Solobay of Washington would leave the first 50,000-square feet of floor space owned by a nonprofit organization tax free and then a $100 per 1,000 square foot fee would be assessed on any remaining space.

George-not quite accurate-you assume that a municipality grows its police departments to match the crime rate-Oh how I iwsh that were true, but the fact remains that most places REDUCE the size of their departments as they need money for other things in the budget. There are exceptions, like North Strabane but most do not have the foresight.
Thw W and J security have no authority off campus.

Boy, what affect to you think this will have on health care? Higher hospital rates for sure. Also expect less for churches toward food banks and other handouts. Will this also include schools. Will this increase our school taxes. will the jails be taxed, courthouse?
