In todays editoral the editor was endorsing Pittsburghs plan to tax college students for the privlage of attending a Pittsburgh college. He seemed to be encouraging Washington to do the same. I realize colleges are tax exempt but they do pay a large fee to the city in lieu of taxes. If this is enacted the colleges should deduct this tax form what they are now giving the cities. The editor must realize that there are other tax exempt properties such as churches and the hospital. Should we make all church goers pay a tax for the privliage of attending a Washington church or tax patients at Washington Hospital for the privliage of being in a hospital bed?

If Washington needs money then tax the residents. Hey, lets tax the inmates at the county jail for the privliage of being locked up.

Maybe North Franklin cann tax everyone who shops in the township, North Strabane can tax everyone to enters the casino. Where will this end.

Perhaps you could provide some figures, George, on how much specific colleges pay in lieu of taxes. I can tell you, it doesn't amount to much.

It really doesn't matter as they are tax exempt. They don't have to give anything. I know W&J gives something and are working with the city to fund a new fire truck. But if they want to tax exempts then tax them all.

So they don't pay a large fee, do they? If our argument now is who should be taxed, I'm all in favor of changing the law to tax the property of churches, schools and hospitals. In my opinion, there should be no exemptions. Some can better afford it than others. But W&J should be able to manage. As I recall, they have an endowment of more than $100 million.

How many people work at W&J? In that (what once was a stub, now a collage of deductions)) on their paycheck are how many taxes taken for Washington and Washington County ?

How much do those kids pay for beer, pop, etc that attend that school?
That school gives to city just fine.

The casino, my God,my God, Praise the Gods in anyones heaven for parting the Red Sea for local governments by sending this manna directly from holiest Halls of heaven, this mother lode for the political gold miners, to Washinton County.

If this 19.9 million dollars a year for property taxes holds up , won't that be enough to fund the yearly budget and then some? Considering what all the casino pays out in overhead every year, and all these people want from them, where will that much money come from?

Even lately, unless the casino is having some sort of free giveaways, that place is almost empty. Maybe the novelty(and people losing) is taking its toll. People are the only source of cash for that place, if the people go, so goes the casino.

Instead of trying to raise cash from a place that may soon have none, how about our Washington Wise Men venture out into the world of reality and bring some honest to God businesses back here to fill those vacant buildings that once housed thriving industries and not tax them out of business just to fill your insatiable appetite for others monies.

Well, why don't you outline your plan for bringing businesses back to downtown Washington. If you owned a business, would you locate there?

get me a job writing for the O/R and assure me the First Amendent is still viable and will keep me out of prison.

My plan will be a lot like Vito Corrleone's, make them an offer they can't refuse. Pussy footing around only shows weakness.

As a parent of a college kid, my thought is although I might grumble at having to pay it, I agree with the 1% fee. These kids are paying $40,000 a year for tuition, room, board, and student fees. Seriously, what is another $300? AND, this fee is for a good purpose...police and fire protection. You want these kids to be safe, don't you?
