Sounds like it might be worth opening the machine up and testing all the connections. Does the disk drawer open when she presses the eject button?

yep it did open. I had to remove the driver, uninstall Roxio, delete some kind of certificate for Roxio after reinstalling it and then it worked. |

Third party software can cause that. Sounds like she was using a version of Roxio not compatible with Vista.
