This is a pretty awesome story. It just makes you wonder how many cops miscalculate their "stopwatch-like devices" so that they can get their daily quota and meet the boys at the doughnut shop.

The difference is...the officers measuring instrument is certified by the state every sixty days-the guys GPS is not. The article is also wrong-the motorist gets a five MPH grace WITH radar, there is no provision for a grace with other devices.

The AP writer should have discussed this with you before typing it up. Or at the least, done a little bit of research instead of misleading me. I've been duped!

I think tetriS is accurate on this one. I would accept him as a verified source on this.

Now I know how phony feels when he was mislead. Except I read an AP story in the OR. He reads a foxnews commentary and believes that gay muslims are taking over the healthcare system

If I could be so bold as to interject. First, Pa. municipalties only get $12.50 per speeding ticket, so they aren't making or breaking a budget using that tool. And I agree with SSSS that the stop-watch (vascar) systems are calibrated every 60 days or less and the guy's GPS probably hasn't been checked since it left the factory. But since they are only as good as the officer's reflexes, I am under the impression the 10 mph rule is standard. Soooo, the AP may be right. And, finally, there's nary a donut shop around! Very Happy

Actually, the mph rule probably depends on where you are.

Quote:
state law says a motorist must exceed the speed limit by at least 10 mph to get a ticket, if police aren't using radar on a road with a speed limit less than 55 mph.

Agreed. Probably dependent upon the local district justice.

no-it is actually in the PA Vehicle Code. And I never feel the need to dignify comments about ticket quotas-they have been illegal in PA for at least thirty years.

There are undoubtedly some jurisdictions that, quotas or not, are more aggressive about speed enforcement, but the bottom line is, if you don't want a ticket, drive within the speed limit.

Can't arguie with that! I know one local officer (retired now) who was prone to smart-azz answers. When a speeder would ask about a quota he would smile and say "I don't have a quota-I can write as many tickets as I want to!" Or "Yep-three more tickets and my wife gets a toaster."
