Haven't found anything redeeming about this OS since we put together this new computer. Finally figured out why my scanner doesn't work correctly. Not compatible with Vista and there is no patch that works.

Glad I never "upgraded" to that POS.

Vista is great. Never had a single problem with it for over 2 years now. No offense, but most Vista problems are user problems.

It's just that when I start to think, "hey, this isn't so bad" something else pops up. Plus, since I have XP at work, switching back and forth mentally is a "user problem" for sure.

The big problem was that XP had such a long lifespan to it. Nobody fretted over changes between operating systems when they came every 2 or 3 years because people recognized that change was good. I don't remember anyone throwing a fit when 5" floppies disappeared overnight and that was a HUGE change. Someone could go out and by a new computer and suddenly not be able to access all their backed up files at all. Computer games were rendered instantly unusable. Nobody cared. But XP was THE system from 2000 to basically 2007. That's almost three times the lifespan of the average OS.

Windows 3.0 was around for like a year, Windows 95, then 98, then 2000, then ME. We were almost getting one a year for a a small stretch there. People got complacent with XP. Then Vista came out and made all these great innovations and the only thing people said about it was, "my printer from 2002 doesn't work anymore." Its like we forgot what progress entails. Some things aren't supposed to be compatible with new versions because they are obsolete. Although that said, I've never had compatibility issues with Vista and older hardware or software.

MS was a little taken aback by the reaction to Vista I think, but they're doing the smart thing with Windows 7. Its basically Windows Vista with a new start bar. Everyone will buy it and think, "this is so much better than Vista," because everyone thought Vista was so horrible. Really they are the same OS with a few minor tweaks. Basically what I said in a blog post last month. MS has turned their Vista problem into a Vista solution by convincing people to pay the full price of a new OS for a theme upgrade. And good for them. I would do the same thing.

I'm still running XP, and I'm perfectly satisfied with it.

Which is fine. But it won't be supported forever. Eventually, you will have to upgrade.

And by waiting, I'll be getting a debugged Vista (or whatever comes after it). I hope.

Vista is debugged now. There's nothing wrong with it.

But I'll hang onto XP as long as I can, because I hate change. Wink

More power to you. I'm not denying that XP is a great OS. If you aren't crazy about upgrading, then you should hang onto it as long as possible because its still awesome and MS is still supporting it heavily for now.

Actually, my HP printer from 2002 does work with Vista. It's my 2008 HP scanner that does not. When I went to HP's website to get a "patch," it didn't work. The HP question forum addressed this and the general consensus was that HP is waiting for 7 to come out, then they will provide the necessary upgrade. One poster insists the available download does work, but I didn't have any more time to play around with it last night. I'll wait until one of my computer guru kids can try.

Which would be HP's fault, not Vista. You probably have to run the scanner's software as administrator; that's one of the biggest confusions about Vista for a lot of people.

That's what was mentioned, running it as "administrator." And that's what I didn't have time to do. I get computer frustrated easily. Confused
