We need more government today. They are trying hard to make our lives better. But there aren't enough politicians. There needs to be more committees and they need more money. Nothing will get better unless government gets bigger so it can operate better for us all.

i hold a slightly different perspective - rather than bigger government, we need better governance. Sort of like the old "Work smarter, not necessarily harder" saying.

How do we get there? The whole thing is mind-boggling, but i think a step in the right direction would be public campaign financing. The way it is now, our elected representatives spend at least as much time fund raising for their next election as they do addressing the business of those they're supposedly elected to represent.

Also, i'm becoming more & more cynical about how our Congress is structured. It comes down to only two parties, often deadlocked over power & ideology. In discussions with other political junkie friends, i often hear how a more parliamentary legislative body would encourage multiple parties and working coalitions instead of the constant Rep/Dem back & forth i've seen all my life.

Perhaps some form of proportional representation like they have in some of the less dysfunctional European parliaments?
