Finally cracked the gueze! This is one of those wine bottle size beers that's corked, although this particular one is not champagne corked, but traditionally corked and capped with a metal bottle cap, to make you use two devices to get into it. Its from the Lindeman's brewery and all their beers are like that (even the smaller ones). They are also all lambics, which means they are fermented by wild yeast. There's a valley in Belgium or France or somewhere around there where this wild yeast lives and instead of just bottling the beer with yeast or kegging it, they put the casks out and leave them open to air. The beer ferments naturally.

Lambics (except for the gueze style) are also always fruit beers. I've had both a cherry and a raspberry lambic and they are very unique beer experiences. The gueze is a non-fruit lambic that is typically a mix of a beer aged a few years and a very fresh beer. The result is something light and low in abv (this one is only 5%).

It pours a slighly amber wheat gold. There is decent carbonation but no real head. Barely anything but the bubbles you can see rising from the bottom of the glass. Its not totally clear but close.

It smells pretty damn good. Wheaty and malty, but very light. There is citrus tartness to it. It is NOT sweet smelling at all, and also NOT bitter at all.

For the taste, look to the smell, but brace yourself. If you've ever had a Flanders bruin or Flanders red then you might be ready for this. Otherwise it'll take you off guard. Its very tart. The character borders on vinegar, but its not as gross as that sounds. In fact, its not gross at all to me. I like it, but this is one beer that would be an acquired taste for most. While I like sitting here and drinking it straight up, I wouldn't recommend having it for most unless you have some food to pair with it. This would go great with a fish dish and some rice; something salty. There is maybe the slightest whisper of bitterness at the very end. I don't know if they use hops in this or not, but I'm guessing they don't.

Feels thinner, very mild carbonation. Goes down real easy if you enjoy the taste. This would actually be a very easy beer to gulp in warmer weather and could also be nursed for a long time as it doesn't wear out its welcome at all. Not aftertaste to speak of save for a lingering tartness.

I'll be frank, I really really like this, but I really really think some of my fellow beer tasters here won't. At least at first. Its...odd.

Sounds very interesting... but like you said, probably not my style. Maybe I'll find someone to split one with me, which I typically do with a Lindemans anyway. Check out the Pomme if you get a chance. Thats my favorite. Then again, if you've had the cherry and raspberry, you're getting the same thing.. only with apple.

I got a 6 pack of troegenator. It tastes good and is 8.2% abv. It's brewed by unicorns in a monastery in liliput. If you drink it, penelope cruz will want you to have carnal knowledge of her.

I actually dont know anything about it... but I didn't want to just say "I drink this beer last night it was yummy oooh!" and sound like an idiot.

It had a subtle hint of bear musk while feeling like black sand on the tongue. The head was reminiscent of long days spent chasing locusts at grandpa's farm while the color was that of an old presbyterian beet farmer from the sun drenched plains of old Kentucky. I drank it from a bowl fashioned from an old cool whip tub while my cat licked between my toes. It was a joyous experience. Religious, really.

Hmmmm... I like this angle. If I ever start a brewery, I'm hiring you to write my descriptions.

I need to elaborate on the gueze. Lindemans brews two gueze: the normal and the cuvee rene. The latter is what I had. I assume its a slightly more highly regarded version since it has a special name.

As I finish the bottle tonight, I realize this beer borders very closely on a white wine, just more sour.

Beer run! After a rewarding trip to the GIANT eagle, I have returned with the following:

Olde GnarlyWine from Lagunitas Brewing Company (Calif.), in the style of a Barley Wine. 11% abv.

BORIS the Crusher Oatmeal Imperial Stout(!) from Hoppin' Frog Brewery(Ohio). Imperial Stout, 9.5%.

A four pack of Sam Adams Imperial White, a beer from their Imperial Series of high abv beers. Its a witbier with an imperial abv, 10.3%.

The first two are solid A's on BA and the Sam Adams is a B. Gonna crack one of the Adams momentarily.

Sam Adams Imperial White

This beer is supposed to be an imperial version of a witbier. That means wheaty citruy beer that is usually around 4-5% abv, but pumped up to 10% like a strong IPA or Stout.

The result is a bit sweet and cloying. Very syrupy feeling and could maybe do with more carbonation. The high alcohol is apparent in the taste and this all mixes to make it very rich and a bit hard to muster. Its a pretty good beer and I'll enjoy the rest of the pack, but I probably won't have it again in the future.

Lagunitas is the chit. Their brewery reps were the biggest hippies. The "Censored Ale" used to be called "the Chronic Ale", and was, at one point, laced with really good weed. Not for sale off the shelves, obviously. They told us how the brewery has been shut down several times because their parties get too out of hand and the brewers got arrested for drug possession. Plus, they make really good brew.

I got a sam smith imperial stout tonight and enjoyed it immensely, I will be getting three more for my beer fridge (I do three of everything?)-

I also got a six pack of double hearted ale from DA BELLS! I like it... it's bitter and dry... not oily and "thick" tasting like dogfish head... I need to learn terminology, I think...

Has anybody tried the Sam Adams Noble Pils that's being advertised now?
