NEW YORK (AP) -- AT&T Inc. will take a $1 billion non-cash charge in the first quarter because of the health care overhaul and may cut benefits it offers to current and retired workers.

I'll respond with one of the comments left on the article you took this one line out of context from. First, the full article:

http://www.startribune.com/business/89280147.html

Now, the reply:

Quote:
The 'benefit' that these companies were getting is part of Medicare D, a poorly constructed program that was instituted under the Bush administration. Under medicare D, companies received subsidies from the government for providing Rx plans to medicare eligible employees that are at least as good as private (direct to consumer) medicare D plans. In the vast majority of cases, these were plans already in place for most employees anyway, and was part of standard employee benefit packages. So the 'subsidy' was a giant corporate hand-out from day 1. The fact that it is being taken away is a victory for common sense.
