As a 14-year-old girl, I am going to have my own opinions. Abstract thinking begins around ages 9 to 11. Today's youth are very abstract, and young people of today will determine the fate of the future.
Whether we can or cannot escape fate, we can determine our own actions. We need to be more tolerant of others in order to be tolerant of ourselves.

I have met many homosexuals, most of whom are close friends of mine. When I was younger, I didn't understand how or why you would want to be gay, and I am not saying I understand every concept of homosexuality, either.

Yes, Phony, it's amazing that a 14 year old Gubmint educated child has a better command of the English language than a 70 year old entitlement farmer.

Whether we agree with her opinion or not is beside the point. The fact that she actually wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper says a lot about what she is learning in school.

I do know though, that in a democracy anybody has the right to be gay, and having that right is great, but how far does that right really go? Gays are missing out on hundreds of rights straights have. I think just as blacks, whites, Asians, Hispanics get "equal" rights, why not gays?

I hate knowing that I get more rights than some of my best friends get, but I do know that I am the future and I do have some say. I do know that we are in for a huge change, but change starts here, with today's youth.

In my 14 years, I have realized my faults as a citizen, which - don't get me wrong - I am very proud to be, but I do want to change this.
