What exactly are they getting free? It has always been illegal to deny healthcare to anyone in need of it. So, they show up at the emergency room with an infected toe nail, and leave with a $2,500 hospital bill that they have no intention of ever paying. And some do this a few times a year, or monthly, or weekly if they need to.

I was in the hospital a month or so ago... I think I told yinz about it... The total bill was like 800 bucks or something, I don't remember what my wife said... anyway, I paid my co pay and the insurance paid the hospital like 260 bucks.

Had I been uninsured, my bill would have been the full amount. When everyone is insured, the hospital KNOWS it's getting paid. Therefore, they are willing to charge a lower fee for service because they'd be happy to get 100% payment on a lower amount rather than writing off procedures or sending bills to collections. Once we are closer to 100% insured population (notice I said "close to") then ALL hospital bills will look more like my 260 dollar bill because they don't have to try to make up for all the non-payment work they are doing.

The fact that this eludes people is astounding to me (pap) Smile

You don't think this isn't going to be a problem as the Med provider is going to be working his/her azz off longer for less ?

Reread E's post. The hospitals overcharge because they know that many of the uninsured either have no intention or no means to pay. They charge three times what they charge an insurance company because they have to make up for those who aren't paying. Its an equal amount that they're getting when close to 100% of the population is paying through insurance, not less.

Um, public forum, buddy.

There are always issues with Medicare reimbursements. Sometimes the payments get processed quickly, sometimes not. Rarely does the media seem to accurately report on it, in my experience.

The doctors i deal with aren't as upset with Medicare as they are with insurance companies tying their hands, or limiting treatment options by refusing to cover needed care based upon actuarials rather than medical justification or necessity.
