I am curious to know what you consider O's greatest accomplishment is and his biggest disappointment is as it relates to you. Do any of you who voted for him feeling let down or are you happy with what he has done. I didn't vote for him so I honestly don't have much of an opinion about about him at all. I am hoping to gain some insight without the usual name calling and defensive posturing that usually goes on, but I know that is going to be next to impossible. Let's give it a try though!

Osama had an opportunity to go down in history as the FIRST GREAT BLACK PRESIDENT, instead of THE FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT......he flucked it up, and cannot recover from that fluck-up.

And phony immediately lets you down by going to name calling with the first word of his comment: "Osama", and followed with absolutely no insight whatsoever.

Anyway.

First off, this is the best question since O-R guy stopped posting a poll every day. As it relates to me, the President's biggest accomplishment is the nomination and confirmation of Justice Sotomayor. I've said this a million times... but I will always vote democrat for the Presidency because of his authori-tie to nominate these Justices.

As it relates to me, the Presidents biggest disappointment, hands down, is his continuation of the occupation in Iraq and war in Afghanistan. The money being burned overseas could easily be paying for millions of jobs and/or millions of uninsured being covered. I'm really starting to feel embarrassed that my country is still over there after all this time.

Chit, you want an essay? I'll explain how the entire country was behind WWII and our production of goods for the war aided in getting us out of the depression.

But from you I want an essay on.... nevermind. Just finger paint a bunch of different colored people holding hands underneath a rainbow and I'll call it even.

Phony I love you, but don't bring WWII into this right now. Let's not go back just yet. You said the other day that it is getting old blaming past admin. for things and I whole-heartidly agree. So lets try real hard to get along{I know Rodney Kingish} just to see what honesty we can gain from each other in a civil way.

Head of nail, meet dick's hammer. I couldn't have said it better myself. A close second would by Gitmo still being open, followed by less emphasis on gay rights (DADT) and immigration reform than I had hoped for at this point, but those things are relatively minor compared to the wars.

I don't have a lot of accomplishments I'm proud of him for yet; I hope to have one this weekend and a few more by the end of term one. I do appreciate his strong language in support of the environment, what I view as the most correct (read: least destructive) choice in dealing with the economy possible, and an overall good track record dealing with international relations so far. I also am glad he continues to fight so hard for health care reform.

Do you feel let down Cy? Is the health care what you wanted to see. I think O should have reigned in his promises when he was campaigning. Maybe concentrated on a few things that he felt were wrong. No one could have accomplished all the things he promised, not even with the best case scenarios. As I said I wouldn't ever vote for him cause we aren't even in the same book let alone page. I am always nervous when people promise too many things. When someone comes in and tells you that they can do you job better and then tries and later realizes that it was much more involved that they thought. I always told you that I want him to do well, because we as Americans deserve that, but I wish he would bring a few more of his promises to fruition. Move on from health care reform if it doesn't pass. Frankly I am sick of hearing about it from both sides.

Dazes...For sure, this is an EXCELLENT question. Bravissima!

I check Politifact's promise tracker on a monthly basis & I'm amazed that Obama is delivering on so many promises & we don't hear about it. So far, he's kept 96 promises & broken 16. If that was a test score, it'd be a B+. That's a pretty good record for any politician. Many promises are already in the works, also. Most of the promises that Obama has broken, I really didn't care about in the first place.

These are some of the kept promises that I'm particularly happy about & would consider big achievements:

1) Many don't realize that the same stimulus package that they hate so much, includes $282 billion in tax cuts over two years. That's one of the biggest tax cuts in history. If this weren't part of the stimulus package & Obama & the Dems had flaunt it more, it would be a HUGE story. Yet, most people don't even know about it. Obama kept a campaign promise that few GOPers thought he'd keep. He promised during his campaign to give one of the biggest tax cuts in history. The GOP said it was a complete lie. Obama delivered on his promise during the first few weeks of his presidency.

2) Also, as part of the stimulus package, Obama expanded funding to train primary care providers and public health practitioners. This is imperative, since we want to expand healthcare coverage.

3) Obama changed the way Homeland Security funding is allocated so that grants are awarded based on risk. For example, last year, most of the funds went to secure the Mexican border bc of the drug cartel wars & intelligence on other threats at the border. This is very smart & very important to our national security.

4) Of course, I'm very happy that Obama is pushing so hard for HCR. Even if the bill doesn't pass, I'll consider it a kept promise since he did all he could. If HCR was passed in '94, when Clinton tried, my mom would probably still be alive.

5) I'm optimistic about the jobs bill.

6) The Iraq troop withdrawal seems to be on schedule & we should finally be out of there by the end of this year.

There are some other kept promises that I'm happy about, but they're not as major. There are others that are still on the works, but I can't list as achievements since they have not yet come to pass.

I would say that my biggest disappointment is the same as Dick's. I wish Obama hadn't sent more troops to Afghanistan & escalated the war. It's not a broken promise since he did say during his campaign that was his plan, but I was hoping that he'd change his mind. Though I admit that the surge is working, I still believe that the war is costing too many lives & too much money.... costofwar.com

I had pretty realistic expectations of Obama and, so far, he hasn't let me down. I didn't expect him to be the Messiah or a miracle worker. I'm also a pretty moderate liberal & I think Obama has been pretty moderate also. As for the critics, I think it's ridiculous to discount Obama as a failure, 14 months into his Presidency. I always remind people that Reagan had a rough start. His approval rating was the same as Obama's starting his 2nd year & was down to 35% by the end of his 2nd year. Unemployment hovered at around 10.2% until the third Summer of his presidency, then the economy & unemployment started to improve. Clinton also had a rough start, yet he managed to get re-elected & was, in my opinion, a good President. So, I will give Obama until the fall of 2011 to improve on the economy, unemployment, etc... & until 2012 to fulfill other promises for his first term.

I read this article last week that I totally agree with...

Quote:

Getting Obama Right

If you ask a conservative Republican, you are likely to hear that Obama is a skilled politician who campaigned as a centrist but is governing as a big-government liberal. He plays by ruthless, Chicago politics rules. He is arrogant toward foes, condescending toward allies and runs a partisan political machine.

If you ask a liberal Democrat, you are likely to hear that Obama is an inspiring but overly intellectual leader who has trouble making up his mind and fighting for his positions. He has not defined a clear mission. He has allowed the Republicans to dominate debate. He is too quick to compromise and too cerebral to push things through.

You’ll notice first that these two viewpoints are diametrically opposed. You’ll, observe, second, that they are entirely predictable. Political partisans always imagine the other side is ruthlessly effective and that the public would be with them if only their side had better messaging. And finally, you’ll notice that both views distort reality. They tell you more about the information cocoons that partisans live in these days than about Obama himself.

The fact is, Obama is as he always has been, a center-left pragmatic reformer. Every time he tries to articulate a grand philosophy — from his book “The Audacity of Hope” to his joint-session health care speech last September — he always describes a moderately activist government restrained by a sense of trade-offs. He always uses the same on-the-one-hand-on-the-other sentence structure. Government should address problems without interfering with the dynamism of the market.

He has tried to find this balance in a town without an organized center — in a town in which liberals chair the main committees and small-government conservatives lead the opposition. He has tried to do it in a context maximally inhospitable to his aims.

But he has done it with tremendous tenacity. Readers of this column know that I’ve been critical on health care and other matters. Obama is four clicks to my left on most issues. He is inadequate on the greatest moral challenge of our day: the $9.7 trillion in new debt being created this decade. He has misread the country, imagining a hunger for federal activism that doesn’t exist. But he is still the most realistic and reasonable major player in Washington.

Liberals are wrong to call him weak and indecisive. He’s just not always pursuing their aims. Conservatives are wrong to call him a big-government liberal. That’s just not a fair reading of his agenda.

Take health care. He has pushed a program that expands coverage, creates exchanges and moderately tinkers with the status quo — too moderately to restrain costs. To call this an orthodox liberal plan is an absurdity. It more closely resembles the center-left deals cut by Tom Daschle and Bob Dole, or Ted Kennedy and Mitt Romney. Obama has pushed this program with a tenacity unmatched in modern political history; with more tenacity than Bill Clinton pushed his health care plan or George W. Bush pushed Social Security reform.

Take education. Obama has taken on a Democratic constituency, the teachers’ unions, with a courage not seen since George W. Bush took on the anti-immigration forces in his own party. In a remarkable speech on March 1, he went straight at the guardians of the status quo by calling for the removal of failing teachers in failing schools. Obama has been the most determined education reformer in the modern presidency.

Take foreign policy. To the consternation of many on the left, Obama has continued about 80 percent of the policies of the second Bush term. Obama conducted a long review of the Afghan policy and was genuinely moved by the evidence. He has emerged as a liberal hawk, pursuing victory in Iraq and adopting an Afghan surge that has already utterly transformed the momentum in that war. The Taliban is now in retreat and its leaders are being assassinated or captured at a steady rate.

Take finance. Obama and Tim Geithner are vilified on the left as craven to Wall Street and on the right as clueless bureaucrats who know nothing about how markets function. But they have tried with halting success to find a center-left set of restraints to provide some stability to market operations.

In a sensible country, people would see Obama as a president trying to define a modern brand of moderate progressivism. In a sensible country, Obama would be able to clearly define this project without fear of offending the people he needs to get legislation passed. But we don’t live in that country. We live in a country in which many people live in information cocoons in which they only talk to members of their own party and read blogs of their own sect. They come away with perceptions fundamentally at odds with reality, fundamentally misunderstanding the man in the Oval Office.

I have always felt that the Presidency was more of a figure head job.Maybe on the same lines as the Queen of England. My expectations for a President are actually pretty low. I believe that appearance to foreign countries is everything , so no public embarrassments, such as the Lewinsky matter, to distort or detract from that image. I don't care what they do in the oval office as far as their personal business, as long as its legal and I don't need to hear about it. I really only want the Prez. to make sure other countries are scared shitless so they don't screw with us. You were probably too young to remember Reagan and Khadaffi. Old Omar drew a line in the sand and proclaimed "line of death do not cross", Reagan said kiss my ass and bombed the hell out of Libya. I was in the hospital birthin my Boo, and loved it! Strength through action. Trust but Verify. Simple and I pray that O never gets put into that position, because I am not sure it's in his makeup. That is one of the reason he did get elected, not my cup of tea. Thanks Ondi. I am not so much interested in promise trackers but more of how these things have affected your life. If we start going down the numbers this whole thread is going to dissolve into a my poll is better than yours and I am hoping that the nasty nasties don't get moving in that direction.

I was pretty young, but I do remember the Libya incident bc it happened around my birthday...My mom was pretty conservative & a big fan of Reagan's, so she was loving it! My dad is more of a moderate liberal, so he wasn't as ecstatic about it! lol I'm guessing Boo's bday is in mid-April...

As for how things have affected me, personally...One of the issues that I'm most passionate about is HCR & I'm extremely happy with the way Obama has pushed for it, especially the last few months. If it fails, I will blame Congress, especially the spineless Dems that vote against it. Obama did his job. The economy is really improving & unemployment decreasing, here in GA...

Boo's birthday is April 16th 1986. It's funny my Dad was a dem. until GW and then dove into being a Cons. with both feet. Reregistered at the age of 72. I guess it doesn't matter how long it takes to get to the party as long as you get there.
