Why would the city need to give a tax break for any repairs due to strom damage? The article seemed to say the repairs would raise your property value and hence your taxes. If the repairs just put you back to where you were are they planning to raise your taxes.
On the other hand, I wouldn't expect them to lower your taxes for a home repair either.
I don't live in the city but I have made home repairs over the years (new roof, windows, sidewalk repairs, driveway upgrades) and did't expect my taxes to go up or down as a result. Its all part of owning a house.

Thats why you write off home improvements. Because they're gonna nail you the next property assessment.

I can agree with improvements but repairs? Come on, if its just a repair in kind your taxes should not be affected.
You know, I wish Washington County had just done the reassessment two years ago. Now that property values are lower we could all be asking for a tax reduction. School diistricts just assume housing valuse increase for ever. Its not that way in the real world, look at many small towns where the mills have gone and see what happened to housing values. Schools, counties and townships need to keep that in mind as they make budgets and settle union contracts. Canton Township is seeing that these days as many mills (Molycorp, Findlay Refractories, Washington Steel) have closed . Those properties have lower tax value now and less income for the township and school district. I will be years before those properties return to the tax rolls.
