ok, that was cute.
Btw, today's Ash Wednesday, so if you see folks walking around with black marks on their foreheads, please don't try to wipe the marks off. Or tell them they have something on their foreheads. We already know. _________________ "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." ~Martin Luther King Jr.

And let's also not forget that we Christians, even (and sometimes especially) those who are clergy, are not always correct when we assume we know how God views our neighbor. _________________ "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." ~Martin Luther King Jr.

That was hilarious, E!!!!!!! _________________ "If by a 'Liberal' they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties ... if that is what they mean by a 'Liberal,' then I’m proud to say I’m a 'Liberal.'" ~ Senator John F. No jab taken.
However, i wonder exactly which words you're referring to? The English words from a specific one of the many translations/versions produced over the past 150 years? The words from the German translation of 500+ years ago? Or the English ones from the Douay-Rheims translation of the same time period? The earlier Middle English ones from the Wyclif version or the even earlier Latin ones from the Latin Vulgate? The ancient Greek ones? What about the Aramaic?
There's been a great deal of interpretation and translation of the Scriptures throughout the entire history of the Christian Church, and far less agreement or congruency among them.
When any one of us Christians claims that our particular understanding of some passage in the Bible is THE one and only understanding that accurately reflects the mind of our God, a warning bell goes off for me. Rather than always approaching the good book with a prayerful attitude of discernment, some awareness of the cultural contexts in which the original texts were written, and an acknowledgment of our own very human preconceptions and prejudices, it seems to me that we're instead making an idol of our own limited understanding.
i tend to agree with a statement i once heard my parish priest make - the entire Bible is the Word of God, but not the words of God. And another one of our deacons made - the English Bible didn't fall from the sky in a holy ziplock bag. _________________ "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." ~Martin Luther King Jr.

That was really great, Amphy. I think I may have to start quoting you.
