So I didn't quite make it to 50 yet, but we can update this list over time. My current recommendations (only includes movies I've seen, tried to avoid OBVIOUS ones that everybody knows are classics).
The quick and the dead - good semi-serious western thriller with some good actors. Highly underrated.
Perfect blue - this movie gets a lot of love from me for being really good all the way through but also being one of those movies where you have no idea in hell what happened by the end. This is an anime. Fun fact: Darren Aronofsky bought the rights to this movie so he could copy one scene frame for frame for the movie Requiem for a Dream.
Ghost in the shell - still one of the most loved animes domestically. This is a great example of how Japan uses animation totally differently than we do.
The goonies - old classic. If you haven't seen it, now's the time.
Batman: mask of the phantasm - Yes, a kid's animated film, but it appeals to adults as well. This came out around the time Batman Forever and Batman and Robin did, and its better than both of those.
Enter the dragon - Bruce Lee's best.
One flew over the cuckoo's nest - An old classic that has been forgotten by the younger generation a bit. Fantastic movie.
Night of the living dead - The scariest movie ever when it came out. So scary that people left the theater feeling sick. Yeah, its lost that shock value, but its still a great movie and the ending still gets you.
Mr. smith goes to washington - Just a great story, nothing more and nothing less.
A streetcar named desire - Vivien Leigh won the oscar for her role in this, but Marlon Brando was ahead of his time. Watch it now and see who you think was better; Leigh was still stage acting, as were most at this time. But Brando realized film acting required a different kind of approach, quieter and more relaxed. For that film geek observation alone, I enjoy watching this.
The royal tenenbaums - Wes Anderson makes the most melancholy comedies ever. This is no exception and my favorite of all his films so far.
The boondock saints - a surprising little indie hit with a cult following. Good action, interesting story, and good acting.
Blow - One of Depp's best performances; only he can make you feel for a drug dealer. In the vein of films like Casino and Goodfellas, but underrated.
Brokeback mountain - you know the story. Its good movie. Watch it.
Cop land - when talking about good crime movies, this one often falls by the wayside. Fantastically underrated.
Miller's crossing - still my favorite Coen Brothers movie.
M - Old old classic, and as disturbing today as it ever was.
Let the right one in - the vampire movie you should watch instead of Twilight.
La femme nikita - French action film that is now a cult classic. Remade in America as point of no return; this version is better.
Yojimbo
Sanjuro - Two great samurai movies by the master, Akira Kurosawa, and starring the legend, Toshiro Mifune. These two never made a bad movie together. Yojimbo was remade, almost scene for scene, as A Fist Full of Dollars starring Clint Eastwood. Sanjuro will always been stuck in my memory for its shocking, perhaps accidentally humorous, but nevertheless unforgettable final scene.
Tell no one - a fairly recent French thriller that manages to just avoid falling into cliches as it twists and turns.
8 1/2 - this movie belongs in a museum of art.
Tetsuo the iron man - a disturbing psychosexual thriller that broke barriers with special effects methods that, while obvious, are visually striking and seem to demand your constant attention. A Japanese version of something David Lynch might do, which leads us to...
Inland empire
Eraserhead - Two Lynch films available for streaming. Empire is his most recent, Eraserhead his first. Empire shows a close kinship to Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive, although it is decidedly even more abstract and metaphorical. As usual, you have no idea what the hell is going on, but its great. Inland Empire is the closest thing I've ever experienced next to having an actual dream...or nightmare. Eraserhead has a similar feeling, but is much more bleak and synthetic in feeling. This movie could almost be a sister film to Tetsuo.
The usual suspects - Just a great mystery thriller. A cult favorite and everyone should see it at least once.
Swimming pool - An interesting, introverted film about a writer and her method of creating her stories. Has a good ending that you probably don't see coming.
Single white female - a classic thriller. Great performances.
Memento - the movie that goes backwards. The novelty has worn off over time...luckily its also a good story and well acted.
Heat - forget Righteous Kill, this is the movie you want if you want to see DeNiro and Pacino reunited after Godfather II. Thought they share the screen only one time (the end), they both are great in this and the story is great too. Val Kilmer has to play third fiddle, but he's good too. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

Yeah, a couple might have been only put up this week. I spotted a few of them in the "new releases" section of streaming. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

If you ever come across "Tobacco Road" watch it. It's about a hundred years old and the first time I saw it was when the 3 networks was all there was and usually on Friday or Saturday after the 11 pm news these old films is about all there was to watch. |

Good list, Cy!! I've seen many of them and I agree that they're great movies...Based on that, I think I may enjoy the ones on the list that I haven't watched! _________________ "If by a 'Liberal' they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties ... if that is what they mean by a 'Liberal,' then I’m proud to say I’m a 'Liberal.'" ~ Senator John F. I really really encourage those of you who have never actually watched anime to try ghost in the shell and perfect blue. They should both be dubbed in english (my DVD versions are) and its really an eye opening experience for those who have always previously associated animation as "family friendly." Fair warning: both are pretty violent and feature some graphic nudity. You were warned. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! I think I'll just stick with old-school, human porn. _________________

Eh, its not quite that graphic. Nor is it the type of nudity that is meant to be arousing. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

I just watched "CSA: Confederate States of America"...
Here's a sypnosis:
Quote: | What would the United States look like if the South had won the Civil War, slavery was still legal and liberals had fled to Canada? According to filmmaker Kevin Willmott (an assistant professor at the University of Kansas), it would resemble the vision put forth in this provocative mockumentary, set in a modern-day Confederate States of America. Spike Lee lends his name as a producer to this daring, if discomforting, parody. |
At times, I thought that this mockumentary was funny, but a little far-fetched. But at the end of it, there was very revealing reality check...Definitely worth watching & it's available for streaming on Netflix.
