So everybody's going to have to detour around the tunnel to get to the bridge on the other side, or go into Wheeling and use the old suspension bridge? Damn, that's going to be a helluva mess.

I don't know, there were about 6-7 flashing signs plus a posted sign saying "West Bound tunnel will be closed Feb. 1st.", thats it.

found something, you ain't gonna like it.

WHEELING - The westbound tube of the Wheeling tunnel is scheduled to close to traffic beginning Feb. 1.

Brent Walker, West Virginia Division of Highways spokesman, on Friday said the closure of the westbound tube will allow crews to complete work similar to what was done on the eastbound tube last year. That work includes the replacement and repair of tiles on the inside of the tube's walls, as well as some electrical work. The work will be done by Ahern & Associates Inc. of South Charleston.

Ahern closed the tunnel on Sept. 8 to address issues not completed by the Velotta Co. of Sharon Center, Ohio, in 2008. Ahern conducted some work on the eastbound tube, and was awarded the westbound job after bidding $6,764,850 in June.

"We feel comfortable with the contractors and we feel that they are a good outfit," Walker said of Ahern.

In addition to the tile replacement and electrical work in the westbound tube, Walker said some electrical work remains to be completed in the eastbound side. That work can and will be completed without closing the eastbound side. Walker also said the installation of closed circuit televisions are still being worked on.

The construction is scheduled to run through October when all work on both sides is expected to be finished. Walker said alternate routes will be the same as they have been in the past.

"Fortunately, and unfortunately, folks in the area know the drill," he said. "However, we don't anticipate any issues with this construction."

The Meadows should get their table games up and running as quickly as possible to take advantage of this.

That metal bridge you mention, is/was that a "pay to cross" bridge?

I had to come through Wheeling way back when U.S. 40 was the only route from and to the East Coast several times but can't remember.

If you're going past Wheeling, into Ohio, take the 470 bypass...If you're going into Wheeling, take the Oglebay exit and find 40 west...both routes are well marked

The 40 west route takes you to the business (north) district, and it's easy to find your way....but you can also take the last exit before the tunnel, 2 south...it's faster, but you need to know your way around the city

Bus, the old suspension bridge might have been a pay span at one point, but certainly not in my memory. I do believe there's a pay bridge further down the river, maybe in the vicinity of Bellaire or Shadyside, Ohio.

In East Liverpool for sure, thing has those metal gratings as roadway and coupled with the memory of "Silver Bridge" collapse and slippery grates, really makes it an awesome ride.
