Should deer season be longer because of the high population of deer in Pa.?

Is the deer population really that high? All of the old timers talk about the days when they would see 20-30 deer in a field. While now they might see 5 - 10 at the most. And wasn't there some horrible disease just a couple years ago that killed half the deer population?
If the deer population is high, then I don't really care what they do. _________________

Deer population may seem higher due in part to the overdevelopment of wooded areas in which they used to be located. They are getting squished into smaller and smaller areas of wilderness. I know I've seen more this year than in years past, which surprises me since "our" coyotes have been known to thin out the herd by snatching the fawns. That being said, I think 12 days is plenty long enough for some crazy part-time hunters to be roaming the woods with loaded guns shooting at anything that moves. I don't mind the responsible sportsmen, but the crazies annoy me immensely. _________________ -amom

Hey, the longer the amount of time we allow Darwinism to run free in the woods of PA, the fewer Republicans there will be voting in the next election. I say keep the season open year round. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

Coming from Los Angeles. where large hairy mammals are frequently gunned down, it was quite surprising to arrive in Pennsylvania and see the four-legged version roaming wild, and humans chasing them with guns... Where I come from, all the big animals are locked up in zoos and prisons...
------
For me, it was like watching a Mastodon walking the street...I could understand the coyotes and raccoons and crows surviving in populated society, they are small and elusive and smart...But deer..? they are big stupid defenseless idiots who should have gone missing like the elk and the bear...Yet there they are, everyday, lying on the side of the road, or running in front of me...Didn't make sense -- they should be extinct in populated areas...
-------
And then I find out that the state receives much revenue from hunting licenses, and hear a rumor that certain interested parties are feeding the deer during the winter, to maintain herd size...
-------

There is definitely something to your conclusion that the Commonwealth makes a lot of doe on hunting licensing. As someone who has lived in PA for all of my life, and has very little interest in state revenues, I take great pride in preserving our wildlife. I've always had a thing for deer since I was a kid. They're amazing animals who are such graceful runners. Unless you have a garden, they're pretty much harmless. You can't blame them for running into your car. Its our fault for putting our home in the middle of theirs. We can certainly coexist with deer... or "deers" as I've heard a thousand times this week. _________________

dick, I don't hate deer, and i certainly support conservation...
What I hate is dishonesty...
A quick study of the population dynamics of large animals in urban areas has proven over and over that their numbers will decline until as a species they are non-viable...It's called a bi-furcation point, and it's a mathematical dead-end...The deer population in our area would and should have reached that point long ago...they would have all been dead, except they are being fed...
Who is feeding them..? _________________ where-ever you get it - there you have it. - Anon. |

my answer to that free will tie in to my answer to your last. No one needs to feed deer-they are extremely resourceful and not at all picky about what they eat.
And yes the State makes a lot of money from the deer. Buit they also SPEND a lot of money managing the deer herd. The PA Game Commission is largely self sustaining-they get very little actual tax money. They run the programs for deer, elk, bear, and other animals largely from the sale of licenses and fines.
Local businesses also benefit greatly from hunting. Many mountain communities in northern PA would become ghost towns without the income generated by hunting season.
There are roughly the same number of deer around here that there have always been-they are just condensed into a much smaller area and therefore much more visible. And dick is right-when we build houses and roads in their territory encounters are inevitable.
As for deer being dumb-please take the time to research them more-they are incredibly cunninng, wary, resourceful creatures that most true sportsmen respect greatly. A deer on main street may appear to be "stupid" just as you might if you were lost on a mountainside-both are out of the element where they feel secure.
In closing-I am very oppossed to people feeding deer for sport-it would be a tragedy for deer to become dependant on humans for survival-they they become just another domesticated animal. _________________
