Experts say protection-from-abuse orders are effective in addressing spousal abuse. Do you agree?

Since I am not an expert, I'll leave it to Linda Moon, coordinator of the Greene County Women's Center. I've never been a part of an abusive relationship. The abuse seems to make the bond between two people very strong. In almost every case, unless court ordered, they tend to get back together.

This Baker character, if the reports are true, seems to be a crazy person anyway you want to look at it. Once a knife, or any weapon, is brought into a situation, it should be taken more seriously than slaps and punches (not saying punching isn't serious, its just not lethal).

I can't edit my comment, but I would like to retract that last part about someone who punches being non-lethal. They are just as likely to strangle their spouse as the crazy guy with a knife. I hope he gets raped in prison before he is sentenced to death. Mostly because he did this in front of his son.

In some cases a PFA makes the abuser more violent and more intent on harming the victim, and oftentimes they succeed (as in this instance). In others, someone files a PFA just to wave it in the defendent's face if things don't go as they planned. I imagine that the PFA's filed in between these two extremes work, with the person staying away under threat of arrest. But, like the woman said, they are not a bullet proof vest.

They are not effective in all cases because they are just a piece of paper and not a physical barrier. Someone who is predisposed to act criminally sees no need to heed words on a paper. However it does give police more "teeth" in the event of a recurrance of the violence.
Having said that, most domestic arrests are a huge waste of police and court time because in a large majority of cases by the time the court date rolls around they have kissed and made up, she still oves him, he promises to not do it again and the charges get dropped. It is a truly sad cycle.
Remember the local "businessman" who was arrested 22 times for domestic violence and never went to court?

I always liked the scene in LA Confidential where Russell Crowe is sitting outside the house where the dude is beating his wife. He rolls in, remodels the dude's face and then drags him outside and cuffs him to his own front stair rail and just leaves him there. He allegedly has a squad car come pick him up later...much later.

The only effective protection from abuse for a battered woman is a father or a brother or a son who carries with him a light conscience and a loaded shotgun

I expect to see a string of unrelated shotgun murders in tomorrows paper.

think of all the money we could save....no incarceration costs, no free health care for the abusers....no court costs...I'd build the coffins for free...

I will bring the nails freethinker. There is no lower form of life than a man who beats a woman or a child.
I used to tell some of them-"Next time you get an over powering urge to hit someone call ME! I will give you a better fight than she does!"

My mother was beaten in front of me and i did nothing but cower in fear...
Many years later, my sister was beaten by her boyfriend....
I showed up in his bedroom at 5 am with a fishing net and battery acid.....
fortunately, no-one was hurt that day, and no-one was ever hurt again.
