The Charleroi-Monessen Bridge is a historic span. Do you think it should be demolished and replaced?

Being originally from the "valley" I'm slightly offended by this...only slightly. We were at the Veterans Parade in Monessen last Saturday, and that town is so sad. Practically nothing but boarded up buildings on the parade route. And once they took out the Keystone bakery in Charleroi, there was no reason to go there anymore either. Wink

As far as the bridge goes, yes it is historic, but it is also unsafe. There doesn't seem to be any way to have structural integrity and historical value any more. A river crossing is needed at or near that location, however, so it seems they have worked out an acceptable compromise.

I understand that we are a "young" country in relative terms... but the bridge is only 103 years old...

At some point, the washington mall will be 103 years old... is that a reason to leave it there?

It would be one thing if it were in pristine condition... but it's broken

Bridges that are not safe should not be traveled. Bridges that are not traveled should be demolished. It may be pretty now, but it'll be an eye sore sooner or later.

As long as that small Italian shop, Stillitano's, is still in business in Charleroi.

There is no reason to leave the Washington Mall where it is NOW!

Talk about a ghost town. I'll bet it's been a decade since I've been inside that mall. The only reason I go anywhere near it is to get to the liquor store of Home Depot.

Now there's an idea; sell liquor in home depot. Power tools and wild turkey go together like peanut butter and jelly.

And will it be any more significant once it magically becomes 3 digits in age? Nope...

"but it's HISTORIC"

We could wait for this to happen.

On December 15,1967 at approximately 5 p.m., the U.S. Highway 35 bridge connecting Point Pleasant, West Virginia and Kanauga, Ohio suddenly collapsed into the Ohio River. At the time of failure, thirty- seven vehicles were crossing the bridge span, and thirty-one of those automobiles fell with the bridge. Forty- six individuals perished with the buckling of the bridge and nine were seriously injured. Along with the numerous fatalities and injuries, a major transportation route connecting West Virginia and Ohio was destroyed, disrupting the lives of many and striking fear across the nation.

That mall failed mainly because of the single entrance and exit to it. Any one remember waiting 5-20 minutes to get out of there as the light changed 5-6 times? Twisted Evil

How old is the silver bridge in Brownsville? Over 70 that I know of. That one is, or soon will be, the oldest one crossing the Mon that I know of. May be a few more left toward Pittsbugh, any one know?
